The New York Mets are expected to be active during MLB’s hot stove season. On top of current free agent decisions like Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, David Stearns and the rest of the front office should also look towards the trade market to make meaningful additions.
A name to watch out for at this time is St. Louis Cardinals’ second baseman, Brendan Donovan, who is thought to be one of the top infielders on the trade market this offseason. Aside from Francisco Lindor, if New York doesn’t retain Alonso, there will be a clear need at either second base or third.

Mets-Cardinals Trade Features Brendan Donovan
In this trade idea, the New York Mets land Cardinals‘ infielder Brendan Donovan, in what would be a nice move for the Mets to kick off the winter.
Donovan has put together three straight solid offensive seasons. He was an All-Star this season and has posted an OPS+ over 110 in every season since he came up.
In 118 games this season, he hit 10 home runs and had 132 hits.
In MLBTradeRumors.com’s top 40 trade candidates, Brendan Donovan  was named as the third most desirable option according to writer Steve Adams:
“Donovan, 29 in January, has emerged as one of the top multi-position players in the game. Heâs a capable to above-average defender at second base, third base and in the outfield corners, and heâs made brief appearances at shortstop and first base as well. In the batterâs box, he holds a hit-over-power approach thatâs served him well.”

His contract status is such that Donovan is facing arbitration this offseason and is set to make $5.4 million.
The 28-year-old second baseman hasn’t hit 14+ home runs in a season yet, but he’s a scrappy hitter who has steadily recorded an OBP over .340. He also doesn’t strike out very much, which would fit well in the Mets lineup.

What Would the Mets Give for Brendan Donovan?
A trade including Brendan Donovan and the Mets could go one of two ways. St. Louis may ask for one of New York’s top prospects, or they could ask for an MLB-ready player like Brett Baty or Mark Vientos, who would slot in the Cardinals’ lineup immediately and make an impact.
The Mets are one of the few MLB organizations that are inevitably going to be linked to every trade candidate.
Owner Steve Cohen and the front office have a lot on their hands this offseason, with hopes to make amends among the fan base and get back to the MLB playoffs. Missing the playoffs last season certainly added fuel to the fire and will enhance the Mets’ aggressive offseason behavior.
