Mets Trade Pitch Lands 2.70-ERA Non-Tarik Skubal Ace

Reports have indicated over the past few days that the New York Mets will be interested in going out and attempting to acquire an ace on the trade market. It’ll be interesting to see what David Stearns has up his sleeves this year, as the Mets are coming off one of their most disappointing seasons in franchise history in 2025.

There will also be multiple arms available for Stearns to pursue, and considering the Mets arguably have the best farm system in Major League Baseball and money to spend for expensive arms, they could be viewed as one of the most logical landing spots for any of the top starters available.

Can the Mets Land a Brewers Starter?

One name in particular that makes sense for the New York Mets is Freddy Peralta.

Peralta is with the Milwaukee Brewers and had an incredible season in 2025, posting a 2.70 ERA, the best of his career. He also pitched in a career high 176.2 innings, as well as striking out 204 hitters. He was one of the best starters in the National League, earning an All-Star nod.

When searching for a potential deal, FanSided’s Tim Boyle pitched the idea of moving on from three prospects for the right-handed.

Brewers get: Brandon Sproat, Ryan Clifford, or A.J. Ewing, and Hunter Hodges

Mets get: Freddy Peralta

“Before the season began, Brandon Sproat was viewed far more favorably than Jonah Tong. The only thing to change this was the big league performance. Between the two, Sproat feels to have a more mid-rotation upside. Tong was way too dominant in the minor leagues to give up for a year’s rental of Peralta. Sproat, on the other hand, feels like he’s beginning to get lost and more of a trade asset than an actual regular in a future Mets rotation. He’s the headliner here…

“Enough? Too much? The end of the relationship between Stearns and Brewers because of how insulting of an offer it is? The deal includes two former top 100 prospects if Clifford is the choice with a rising one in Ewing if that’s the preference. It’s not conclusive what Milwaukee is looking to get for Peralta. They’re pretty set at multiple positions. Players on the verge of being significant big league contributors seem to fit them best,” he wrote.

Will the Brewers Trade Their Star Pitcher?

The question for the New York Mets will be centered on whether the Milwaukee Brewers will trade Peralta.

After one of the best seasons in franchise history, falling short to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS, trading Peralta doesn’t make much sense. However, the Brewers have made many questionable decisions in recent years, and he’s set to hit the free agency market in 2027, so that’s something they’ll have to consider.

According to The Athletic’s Andy McCullough, sources believe that the Brewers will at least field offers on him this winter.

“In this case, as the winter unfolds, the Brewers are expected to at least field offers for starting pitcher Freddy Peralta, according to people familiar with the situation who requested anonymity in order to speak freely. Milwaukee holds an $8 million option for 2026 on Peralta, who went 17-6 with a 2.70 ERA and made his second All-Star team this season. The team can afford to retain Peralta, but will feel compelled to at least explore the market for his services, especially given the relative weakness of this class of free-agent pitchers,” he wrote.
