Mets Trade Proposal Lands Youngster from Lousy NL Team to Fix Biggest Need

The New York Mets have been one of the best-run organizations in baseball ever since Steve Cohen took over, adding David Stearns as his head of baseball operations.

Stearns is widely regarded as one of the top executives in Major League Baseball, and he’s continued to prove that during his time with the Mets. Sitting at 42-24 and 8-2 over the last 10 games, the Mets hold a 4.5 game lead over the second-place Philadelphia Phillies.

It’s all but certain that the Mets will be aggressive at the trade deadline, but it remains uncertain who they’ll go after.

When searching for potential options, Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently proposed a trade idea that would land them some bullpen help in the form of Seth Halvorsen, a right-handed reliever from the Colorado Rockies.

“The Mets’ biggest need appears to be bullpen depth and, as usual, the trade market will offer plenty of possibilities. My favorite option would be Halvorsen, a right-handed reliever who has a 4.91 ERA over 26 appearances and three saves for the Rockies.

“His fastball averages 100.1 mph. He also ranks in the 78th percentile in off-speed run value, the 92nd percentile in ground-ball rate, and the 90th percentile in extension. Halvorsen, 25, made his major-league debut in 2024 and finished last season with a 1.46 ERA in 12 outings. Wait until the Mets’ analytics and pitching experts get a hold of him,” he wrote.

Rockies Expected to Be Sellers

The Colorado Rockies have been one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball, and they’re expected to sell. Halvorsen, still only 25 years old, would be a tough player to give up on.

However, unlike the New York Mets, the Rockies aren’t in a position to contend anytime in the near future. He owns a 3.79 career ERA in just 38.0 innings, but he’s very young, and that should entice the Mets.

How Aggressive Will the Mets Be?

Despite the need for the New York Mets to improve their roster, it’s important to remember that there will be some challenges in doing so. Joel Sherman of the New York Post recently spoke about those, adding that the marketplace has to cooperate, and it remains uncertain which teams will decide to sell for now.

“You may want to go hard at the deadline, but the marketplace has to cooperate and — right now — it is difficult to see the kind of sales piece that makes the sport stop and gasp. The bad teams — we see you over there, Rockies, White Sox, Pirates, etc. — are bad because they lack difference-makers and/or are unwilling to part with them (see: Pittsburgh, Paul Skenes). But a lot changes as the draft comes and goes and organizations have to look in the contention mirror and decide whether they are or they aren’t,” he wrote.

However, Sherman also pointed out that the New York Mets are in good hands with Stearns. He noted that he’s demonstrated his ability to acquire talent, and if he continues to do so, the Mets should be in a good position to contend.

“In David Stearns, we should trust. He has shown a deftness in acquiring players throughout his career, including last year at his first Mets deadline. He is not perfect — no one is. But he knows what he likes, what he believes works and now has the Mets’ financial infrastructure to provide an unlimited field of vision,” he wrote.
