The Miami Heat hope to enter the LeBron James sweepstakes this summer when the all-time great becomes a free agent. James spent four seasons in Miami and won his first two NBA Championships leading the Heat. Rumors have circulated about the Cleveland Cavaliers hoping to bring LeBron back for a retirement tour, but it appears that Miami has the same goal in mind.
Sports Illustrated reported the following about the Heat’s offseason plans:
“With the Heat showing their hand of going for a star, if they fail in the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes again, if there are any in the summer, a pivot to James makes some sense. It certainly does not bring the long-term championship window that Antetokounmpo would, but it opens it.
They could likely have room to bring in James on an intriguing contract, especially with guard Terry Rozier being off their books–Rozier was making, on average, $24,064,674 per season.”
The report indicates that Miami knows that LeBron would be a drop off from Giannis Antetokounmpo if their top plan fails. Pat Riley clearly wants Giannis to lead the franchise to contention for the next few years as his dream scenario. However, James does provide a strong improvement if added to the current roster.
Can Miami Realistically Add LeBron James?
It remains unlikely that LeBron will agree to return to the Heat as it currently stands. James has seen the upside of staying with the Los Angeles Lakers and remaining part of the “big three” with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
Head coach JJ Redick playing Bronny James more will add greater temptation for LeBron to stay in Los Angeles for another season or two until retirement. The Cavaliers are the more interesting team since they have an easier path towards contending for an NBA Championship with their current roster.
James also has a deeper relationship with his hometown Cleveland fans to make that provide more appeal on paper. Miami will likely have to make another move to upgrade their roster if they expect LeBron to pick them over the Lakers and Cavaliers in free agency.
Miami Heat Are Committed To Adding A Star
The recent trade deadline showed that the Heat were all in on Antetokounmpo until the Milwaukee Bucks ended all talks. Expect Pat Riley to give his best possible offer for a former two-time MVP on the market still in his prime.
James stands out as a great backup option to go after and bring back to Miami for the first time in 12 years. Kawhi Leonard is another big name rumored to draw trade packages or potentially get his contract waived if the Los Angeles Clippers are punished for allegedly paying him under the table.
Riley will be invested in all major names on the market since the Heat has missed on adding superstar talents over the past few years. Miami clearly needs one big star and could rally their current role players around said player. A superstar joining Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, and Andrew Wiggins could contend for a title if they are ready to lead.
