Michael Porter Jr. is setting the record straight about his “generational podcast run” from last summer.
During a recent appearance on Carmelo Anthony’s 7PM in Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Nets forward reflected on how his unfiltered comments across different podcasts turned into viral moments and headline fodder, per Complex.
Porter said he didn’t realize just how much traction his interviews were getting until much later, admitting that he’s now stepping away from doing new podcasts altogether.
“Like I’m really just talking sh-t, but then I didn’t even know that it was going so crazy,” Porter said. “Like I really didn’t. I’m not really on social media. I didn’t know people were taking it to that extreme.”
‘I Was Just Talking’
Porter’s viral streak featured candid thoughts about relationships, social media, and controversial figures such as Andrew Tate, sparking a mix of praise and backlash online. One clip that made the rounds showed him explaining why he wouldn’t date someone who previously had ties to another NBA player.
“If it’s somebody I’m going to be around on a daily basis and have to see them, and they’ve hit your chick or whatever, it’s going to be tough to deal with,” he said. “Maybe some dudes are emotionally locked in enough that it won’t bother them, but that’s not me, bro.”
He also clarified that his comments about Tate weren’t meant to endorse or defend him, but rather to provoke honest conversation. “It’s funny to see how people react to certain things,” Porter said.
The Nets star added that many of his viral clips came from relaxed, off-the-cuff settings rather than formal interviews.
“What gets me in trouble is that I’ll have conversations that are supposed to be private, or that people think should be private, and I’ll just say it on a podcast,” he said. “But I don’t think that’s the end of the world. I think more people should do that, say how you really feel. People are so filtered.”
Understanding the Setting
While Porter didn’t walk back his opinions, he did acknowledge that context and tone matter when discussing sensitive topics.
“Certain topics need to be spoken about in a more professional setting because some things are sensitive,” he said. “Like the PlaqueBoy Max stream, that’s not a professional setting. We chilling with our shirts off in the backyard. He’s asking me random questions about the WNBA or whatever. Those conversations should be OK to have, but it’s about the setting. It needs to be in a respectful way.”
Away from the mic, Porter continued to let his game speak for itself. On Wednesday night, he scored a season-high 32 points for the Brooklyn Nets in a close 117-112 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, SNY reports. The Nets dropped to 0-5 for the first time since the 2015-16 season despite Porter’s big night.
Jalen Johnson led the Hawks with 23 points as Atlanta held off Brooklyn after losing star guard Trae Young to a knee injury in the first quarter. Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 18 points, and Luke Kennard went 4-for-5 from three-point range to help secure the win.
