The New York Jets lost a heartbreaker to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 29-27 in Week 3.
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked what he learned from the Jets heading into Week 4, coming off that game.
“They are who we thought they were,” McDaniel responded, channeling his inner Dennis Green at the podium.
On the surface, that could be taken as an insult. Gang Green is often referred to as the “Same Old Jets” when they find creative ways to lose. However, McDaniel meant it as a compliment.
“In terms of, I have tremendous respect for AG [Aaron Glenn] and the program that he is building over there. It kind of mirrored, we go all the way back to Cleveland in 2014, and it kind of mirrored what I would expect in terms of there is a standard of effort and intent. With teams like that, the worst thing you can do is assume that they’re left for whatever because they will punch you right in the mouth. I thought it kind of matched what I expect from a program that he is running. In the National Football League, you’re humbled quick if you take your foot off the gas. They made some people nervous while showing their internal fortitude,” McDaniel explained.
Two Coaches Reunited on Monday Night Football
Glenn’s first job in the coaching world was for the Browns as an assistant defensive backs coach. He spent two seasons in Cleveland from 2014 to 2015. McDaniel crossed over with Glenn for one of those seasons in 2014 when he was hired as the team’s wide receivers coach.
Glenn is in his first year as an NFL head coach. McDaniel is in his fourth season as the HC for Miami.
According to Covers, McDaniel is the heavy favorite (-500) to be the first NFL head coach fired this season.
An NFL Return in Week 4 for the Dolphins
Dolphins tight end Darren Waller has been battling a hip injury over the last couple of weeks. According to ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques, Waller “is expected to make his season debut” in Week 4.
In an offseason full of storylines, the Dolphins pulled off a shocker, convincing Waller to come out of NFL retirement and to join them via trade from the New York Giants.
Waller stands at 6-foot-6 and tips the scales at 238 pounds. When he is healthy and his head is screwed on straight, Waller is a mismatch nightmare.
Waller, a former Pro Bowler, has hauled in 350 receptions for 4,124 receiving yards and has scored 20 touchdowns in his career.
“That dude walks around, he looks like a tower over guys,” WR Malik Washington told Louis-Jacques. “So with his ability to catch the ball, his ability to run routes, and his ability to block and be on his assignment, we’ve seen it in practice and stuff. I think adding him just adds another playmaker to our team.”
Key Injury Updates for Jets-Dolphins
“This might be the healthiest the Dolphins have been in a while,” Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald posted on social media.
“Storm Duck and Jason Marshall Jr are the only players who sat out practice,” Kelly added.
