It’s probably safe to say anybody watching the NFL late Sunday afternoon saw video of Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf appearing to punch a Detroit Lions fan in the crowd at Ford Field during Week 16. The CBS broadcast of the Steelers-Lions showdown aired a replay of the Metcalf fan altercation during the second quarter.
Within minutes, the video went viral.
But one person who hasn’t seen video of the incident is Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.
“I heard about it, but I haven’t seen it,” Tomlin told reporters in his postgame press conference. “And I haven’t had an opportunity to talk to D.K. [Metcalf], so I have no comment.”
The NFL on CBS posted video of the altercation on X. The clip is only 11 seconds, but shows Metcalf grab a fan by what appeared to be a blue wig. The Steelers receiver then swung his fist toward the fan.
As of 8:30 pm ET Sunday, there is no video of what led to the incident. But there was an overwhelming popular opinion on social media Sunday evening that Metcalf should receive a suspension.
CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore reported during the second quarter that Metcalf was not ejected from Week 16 because the officials didn’t see the altercation. A CBS camera at Ford Field caught the incident on camera.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s reposted vide of the altercation alone received more than 3.5 million views in its first three hours.
