New Browns Play-Caller Takes Aim at Jerry Jeudy ‘Frustration’

Back in 2024, after the Browns made the switch from Kevin Stefanski to Ken Dorsey as the play-caller, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy‘s production skyrocketed. In the final 10 games of the year, Jeudy had 69 catches for 963 yards and three touchdowns, which would be a very good full season for most receivers. Jeudy had totaled just 21 catches for 266 yards in his first seven games.

It helped that the Browns also lost Deshaun Watson and made a quarterback change at that point. Here in 2025, Stefanski is again making a play-calling change, giving the duties to offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Jeudy’s numbers, meanwhile, are even worse than they were in the first seven games of last year, as he has 22 catches and 257 yards through eight games.

Jeudy had no catches and, amazingly, no targets in Week 8 against the Patriots. Is change coming for Jeudy under Rees, despite the fact that there is no corresponding quarterback move, that Dillon Gabriel will remain the QB?

“We’ll see on Sunday,” Jeudy said this week.

Browns’ Tommy Rees Does not Want Opponents to ‘Hone In’ on Jerry Jeudy

Rees very much understands that the Browns getting the ball to Jeudy is a significant part of the assignment here.

He was asked about delivering targets and touches to his star receiver, and Rees talked around the issue, saying the team needs to not “hone in” on Juedy, but also wants to feed him.

“I think you got to be multiple in what you do, so that way you can’t just let them hone in and take something away. But that’s a good perspective, right?” Rees said. “Like, there’s a balance between, ‘Hey, feature these guys, get them easy touches’, also understand that that could happen in the rhythm of the game.

“But look, we’re better when our best players are playing well, we’re better when our best players are touching the ball. So, I think that’s an area of focus for every team, not just us. So, our job as coaches is to find ways to not allow them to take that away.”

Jerry Jeudy Admits ‘Frustration’ Heading Into Week 10

That would seem a good idea. There’s some question about whether Gabriel is the guy to test defenses that way, however. The Browns QB has completed just one deep pass, of more than 20 yards, this season on six attempts. He threw an interception on one of those balls.

Defenses are not exactly giving Browns receivers room to operate, and that’s tough on Jeudy.

“It’s frustrating for sure,” Jeudy said on Wednesday. “But I got to go to the next play, you can’t hold that frustration for too long. If it don’t go the right way, I just think, ‘OK, it’ll come the next play.’ If it don’t come the next play, I think, ‘OK, it’ll come the next play.’ You kind of trick your mind in a way.”

Browns Must Take Advantage of Depleted Jets

Despite the frustrations of this season, and the possibility that those frustrations will continue as long as Gabriel stays at the helm, Jeudy said he is doing his best to show the rest of the offense that he’s ready to get back to a starring role.

As long as the Browns figure out how to get him the ball. Sunday would be a good start–the rebuilding Jets just traded away star cornerback Sauce Gardner, after all.

“I just worry about doing what I do out there in practice, you know, a feel I let my work show for itself,” Jeudy said. “What I do out there in practice should make you want to give me the ball. That’s how I go about it. I don’t really say too much I just handle my business.”
