The Vancouver Canucks made some notable moves this summer, like extending Brock Boeser, Thatcher Demko, and Connor Garland. They added Evander Kane to their roster in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers.
Overall, it has been a busy offseason for the Canucks. Yet, when looking at their roster, it would be wise for them to make a few more additions. This is especially so when noting that they are looking to get back into the playoffs after missing them last year.
One specific area where the Canucks could look to improve is their defensive group. The San Jose Sharks have an interesting trade target to consider in Mario Ferraro. The left-shot defenseman has been the subject of trade rumors for quite some time, and they have only been picking up.
Due to this, Heavy Sports has a trade proposal that has the Canucks acquiring Ferraro from the Sharks in a late-summer move.
Canucks Get:
- Mario Ferraro
Sharks Get:
- 2026 Second-Round Pick
- 2028 Third-Round Pick
- Sawyer Mynio
Mario Ferraro Is Trade Candidate to Watch
With the Sharks rebuilding, Ferraro has been a big name in the rumor mill for multiple seasons now. Yet, questions about his future in San Jose are only increasing, now that he is entering the final year of his deal. With this, he is a trade candidate to watch between now and the 2026 NHL trade deadline.
In a recent column for The Fourth Period, NHL insider David Pagnotta reported that Ferraro should generate interest once again this season.
“Expect to hear Mario Ferraro’s name out there again this season, likely in the second half, as teams will look to add to their blueline for their playoff runs,” Pagnotta wrote.
It certainly would be understandable if Ferraro generates a ton of interest this campaign. He is a legitimate top-four defenseman who plays a strong all-around game, so he is undoubtedly an appealing player. With the Canucks looking to get back into the playoffs, he would be a big-time pickup for their roster.
Why Ferraro & Canucks Could Be Good Match
With Ferraro being a steady defenseman who can handle big minutes, it would make sense for the Canucks to pursue him. When looking at Vancouver’s lineup, he would at least give them a notable upgrade for their bottom pairing. However, he also could work in a top-four role on Vancouver if he or Marcus Pettersson moved to the right side.
Furthermore, due to his steady defensive play, he would give the Canucks another defenseman to work with on their penalty kill. In addition, Ferraro’s contract would make him a realistic target for Vancouver. He has a reasonable $3.25 million cap hit, while Vancouver has roughly $3.27 million of cap space. Thus, they could make a deal work.
Why Canucks Could Land Ferraro With This Trade Offer
With the Sharks rebuilding, they should be on the hunt for draft picks. Due to this, the Canucks offering their 2026 second-round pick and 2028 third-round pick would be a good starting point in a potential Ferraro deal.
With Mynio, the Sharks would be bringing in a promising prospect defenseman who has the potential to become a solid NHLer in the future. In 49 Western Hockey League (WHL) games split between the Seattle Thunderbirds and Calgary Hitman last season, he had 14 goals and 45 points. These numbers are certainly encouraging and could make him an appealing target for San Jose in a potential move.
