It is Week 12 of the College Football season, and that means the playoff committee starts to get together weekly to decide on the top-25 teams in the nation. In the most recent rendition of the College Football Playoff rankings, the Georgia Bulldogs remain at No.5, and six teams from the SEC are in the top-12: Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Texas, and Oklahoma.
Georgia squares off against the Texas Longhorns in a top-10 showdown this Saturday, which feels like a playoff game for Texas. Texas Tech is also closing in on the top four with its win over No. 12 BYU. Ohio State stays as the top-ranked team in the nation, and Indiana, Texas A&M, and Alabama round out the top four. The top four seeds receive a bye.

New College Football Playoff Matchups
If the CFP started tomorrow, Georgia (5) would take on BYU (12). However, it’s important to note that these initial rankings are sure to shake up, as the playoff committee did not include a group-of-five team in the top-12 yet, but once the AAC champion is crowned, that team is also likely in.
Other matchups: Oklahoma (11) vs. Texas Tech (6), Ole Miss (7) vs. Texas (10), Oregon (8) vs. Notre Dame (9)

It’s noteworthy that the committee seems to be favoring the SEC at this moment. The SEC is an action-packed conference, with heavyweights at the top. Â Both Alabama and Texas A&M are undefeated in SEC play, and Georgia’s only loss is to Alabama. But other teams like Texas and Ole Miss continue to field great cases why they should also be in. For the Longhorns, they will have the chance to prove themselves against both Georgia and Texas A&M.
So the reality is that the top 12 you see now is bound to change drastically. BYU would likely have to win its conference, and Miami’s status would also change if they don’t win the ACC.
What Does This Mean for Georgia?
For the Georgia Bulldogs, these new rankings mean a few things. First off, their opponent may change depending on which group of five teams ends up being in. However, if they remain in the top 8, Georgia will host a playoff game in Sanford Stadium.
If Georgia drops one of its last three games, their ranking is also likely to change. The Bulldogs have a great resume, so dropping to either Georgia Tech or Texas isn’t going to knock them out of the rankings altogether, but it may shift where they end up.
There are just three college football teams that remain unbeaten: Ohio State, Indiana, and Texas A&M.
It will be interesting over the next couple of weeks to see how the College Football Playoff ranking continues to develop as bigger dominoes either start to fall or other teams try to strengthen their case in the minds of the committee.
