New Docuseries to Commemorate 50 Years of Bucs Football

On Thursday, December 11th, Raising the Flag, a docuseries commemorating 50 years of the Bucs franchise will premiere on Amazon Prime Video.

The 10-part docuseries will focus on the rise of the Bucs franchise as they built from the ground up, going 0-26 in their first two season to lifting two Super Bowl trophies in the span of two years in the ’90s. One specific April night in 1995 is expected to feature heavily.

On that night, general manager Rich Mckay swung two massive trades in the draft, allowing him to select Warren Sapp with the 12th overall pick and Derrick Brooks with the 28th. The docuseries will look to hone in on those stories and more.

Behind the Draft Decisions That Rewrote the Franchise

Directed by Emmy-Award winning cinematographer and filmmaker Trent Cooper, it encompasses 100 odd interviews with players, coaching staff, executives and media personalities with equal amounts of archival footage as well.

“Raise The Flags is a celebration of the people, the perseverance, and the passion that built this franchise over the past 50 seasons,” Glazer said of the project. “We wanted to create an honest and comprehensive look at our journey – from the earliest challenges to the unforgettable championship moments – and to honor everyone who has shaped the Buccaneers franchise into what it is today. This series celebrates that rich history in a way that has never been done before.”

There will be several more key moments that the series hones in on, specifically the arrival of Doug Williams, one of the NFL’s first black quarterbacks to have success. More memorable moments could showcase the rise of Tony Dungy, the path to the first two Super Bowls in franchise history, and Tom Brady’s arrival and immediate  success with the franchise.

Icons, Turning Points, and Untold Moments

Most importantly, Cooper wanted to document the more intimate moments that fans rarely get the chance to see, the small details that define a franchise, but largely go unheard. “I grew up in the Tampa Bay area and have loved the Bucs my entire life, but storytelling is my job, and this story has it all: grit, heartbreak, community, unforgettable characters and more,” said Cooper. “The best part of this project for me has been going deep into the rise of this franchise and uncovering stories even lifelong fans never knew”. Some moments answer key questions, such as who really yelled at Brady to prevent him from tossing the precious Lombardi Trophy over open water during a Super Bowl parade?
The best part may stem from the fact that countless Bucs players get asked the same question: who is the best Bucs player in franchise history? Many will have different answers, as well as the fans who choose to watch, but at the end of the day, it will spark massive debates in return.
The series continues the trend of those that document sports history, specifically for Amazon Prime Video. This time however, it feels like a completely separate capsule for Bucs fans to cherish forever..and debate over for many years to come.
