LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers is 41 years old and has played and won more games than any other player in NBA history, now attempting to win yet another as his team faces off against the Oklahoma City Thunder in a key game on Thursday, April 2.
While James has taken a step back for the Lakers, making way for younger stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, major questions remain on his future both in Los Angeles and in the NBA as a whole.
Though the question of what James will do next, whether it be staying with the Lakers, going to a new team as a free agent this offseason, or finally retiring, remains unanswered, one league insider recently dropped a bold prediction as to what the NBA’s all-time leading scorer will do next.
NBA Insider Drops Bold LeBron James Retirement Prediction
Speaking on a live stream, NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints. com revealed his thoughts on James’ retirement.
“My feeling in talking with other people around the league is that if the Lakers do go on that magical run and they go to the NBA Finals and they somehow win the Larry O’Brien trophy, I think that would be it for LeBron,” he said of a potential James retirement. “I think that he would retire on a high note, go out as a champion. I think that’s just something to kind of keep an eye on and keep in the back of our minds.”
Again, to be clear, James has not said anything concrete about retirement. In fact, while he has said that he’s ‘getting older‘ and that he doesn’t know how much longer he has to play, the 41-year-old has yet to announce his plans after this NBA season.
“Yeah, I mean, I want to live,” James said before the 2026 NBA All-Star Game when asked about his future plans for his career, per ESPN. “When I know, you guys will know. I don’t know. I have no idea. I just want to live, that’s all.”
Regardless, as Siegel said, James retiring after winning a championship, his fifth career title, while he might not win the Finals MVP or even be a top-two contributor on the team, would still be a storybook ending to his career.
Still, James entering retirement remains uncertain, even according to the NBA’s top insiders.
“LeBron hasn’t made a decision on whether he’s going to continue to play. I think the feeling around LeBron James around the league is he’s going to go at least one more season,” Shams Charania said in mid-March about James.
LeBron James This Season With The Lakers
GettyLOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – MARCH 30: LeBron James #23 of the Los Angeles Lakers reacts against the Washington Wizards in the first half at Crypto.com Arena on March 30, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.
In his record-breaking 23rd NBA season, James is averaging 20.7 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and 1.1 steals on 51.2/31.4/74.4 shooting splits in 55 games for the Lakers.
While he obviously isn’t the same player he was with the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, or even with Los Angeles a few years ago, he remains extremely impactful, and would be highly sought after should he choose to join a new team in free agency this offseason.
However, he is still a member of the Lakers, a team that has been surging over the past month by way of Doncic’s MVP-level performances, as well as James’ buying into his new role as the team’s third option on defense, which was announced by head coach JJ Redick.
“We’re in a good place right now. The chemistry is high. Everyone loves being around each other. We love playing for one another. We love being off the floor with one another. It’s a good, tight-knit group,” James said after the Lakers’ recent win over the Cavaliers, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
While the question of what James will do next, whether it be staying in Los Angeles, going to a new team in free agency, or entering retirement remains to be answered, what is known is that if he does end his career, specifically, after winning a fifth championship, it would put a near-perfect bow on what has been one of the greatest and most prolific careers in NBA history.
