Newcastle have held talks with free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is also on the radar of Manchester United this summer.

The 28-year-old left Everton at the end of the season when his contract expired and is now looking for a new club.

The 11-cap England international was once linked with big-money moves to top clubs, but recent seasons have been plagued by injuries and his stock has fallen.

However, now he is available on a free transfer, big clubs are interested in taking a gamble on the forward.

Manchester United have been linked with snapping him up as they look to revamp their options in attack and have missed out on targets including Viktor Gyokeres.

TalkSPORT report that Newcastle have also held ‘fresh talks’ with Calvert-Lewin, potentially bringing him in as back-up to star striker Alexander Isak.

The result of those talks is not clear, but there is interest from the Magpies, with manager Eddie Howe said to be a long-term admirer of the Sheffield-born striker.

Newly-promoted Leeds United have also been credited with an interest in the Yorkshireman, but his wage demands are reportedly out of their reach.

Newcastle are in need of a new striker after Callum Wilson confirmed he has left the club at the end of his contract on Monday.

The 33-year-old has been at St James’ Park since 2020, scoring 49 goals in 130 appearances for the Magpies.

He too has suffered with injuries, though, and since the arrival of Isak has fallen down the pecking order.

Last season saw him score just one goal in 22 appearances in all competitions, with the vast majority of those outings coming off the bench.

Wilson posted an emotional message on social media, which read: ‘To all you Magpies..

‘It’s time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon.

‘Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.

‘I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate end really is as special as they say.

‘All good things come to an end but there’s no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my families hearts.

‘Thankyou for the memories.’
