Former England boss Gareth Southgate and Manchester United great Michael Carrick are the favourites to replace Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.
On another humiliating night for the club, United crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the second-round stage after they were beaten on penalties by League Two outfit Grimsby Town.
While the new season is less than two weeks old, Amorim already finds himself under mounting pressure having taken just one point from their opening two Premier League matches.
Defeat to Arsenal on the opening day was Amorim’s 15th in 28 league games since his arrival in Manchester last November. A draw at Fulham saw the same old problems arise while last night’s defeat at Blundell Park served as a new low for the Portuguese coach.
United host newly-promoted Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday where another defeat could have huge implications.

Bookmakers Coral now have Amorim odds on not to be in charge at United by the time 2025 is over with Southgate emerging as the early favourite to replace the former Sporting CP boss.
Southgate has been out of management since stepping down as England boss after defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Former United midfielder Carrick, who managed United for three games as interim boss in 2021, is also among the leading pack, currently a free agent after being sacked by Middlesbrough in June.
Bookmakers Coral name Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner as another leading candidate.
The German coach led Crystal Palace to FA Cup glory last season but has aired his frustration with the club’s lack of transfer activity this summer having also lost talisman Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.
Speaking after Thursday’s defeat, Amorim admitted ‘something has to change’, suggesting his players are ‘speaking really loudly’ about what they truly want.
When asked what went wrong, Amorim said: ‘Everything. The way we started the game, we were not even here.
‘When everything is so important in our club, everything that happened, it’s a problem in our club, we should do so much better. I just have to say sorry to our fans.
‘I felt my players spoke really loud today what they want. I think it’s easy for you [how to interpret it]. Let’s focus on the next game and then we have the stop for the international games. We will think things through.’
