The New York Giants had a busy offseason completely retooling the quarterback room by signing a former 10-time Pro Bowler, a former No. 1 overall pick, and trading back into the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft to develop a quarterback of the future.
Well, one NFL analyst believes the Giants should make a one more big move at the QB position entering the 2025 NFL season.
NFL Analyst Mark Schlereth Suggests Giants Should Cut QB Russell Wilson
Fox NFL Analyst and former Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth had a pretty straight forward message to the New York Giants regarding their quarterback situation entering the 2025 NFL season on a recent episode of Breakfast Ball on FS1.
Schlereth said, “”The Giants should cut Russell Wilson and start Jaxson Dart.”
Schlereth once played with Hall of Fame QB John Elway during his time winning Super Bowl titles with the Denver Broncos.
Schlereth touched on Wilson’s uninspiring tenure in the Mile High City by saying, “I’ll take this from the perspective of what went down in Denver just a year ago. In Denver, they had Russell Wilson. They moved on from Russell Wilson. Russell, he has a propensity to take way too many sacks, not throw the ball in the middle of the football field (and) all these different things.”
Wilson’s stats during his time in Denver weren’t catastrophic with 6,594 passing yards, 42 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in his two years with the Broncos — but he was benched in favor of Jarret Stidham at the end of the 2023 NFL season with a 7-8 starting record under new head coach Sean Payton.
On the surface, Wilson’s 42 touchdown passes with just 13 interceptions combined over the last two years with the Broncos and Steelers is a quality TD to INT ratio but simply hasn’t included much overall team success.
Schlereth believes starting the rookie quarterback simply makes more sense for the organization moving forward by prioritizing Dart’s development by adding, “You start your rookie and you go with the growing pains and you understand that you’re not going to the playoffs right now,” he said. “You do have a great defense, which is one of the best things you can give a young quarterback is a great defense. I think it’s just time to rip off the Band-Aid and say, ‘Jaxson Dart, you’re our guy.’”
Would Cutting Russell Wilson Make Jaxson Dart the Unquestioned Week 1 Starter?
Many fans would likely expect Jaxson Dart to be the Week 1 starter if the team surprisingly cut Russell Wilson ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
After seeing the impressive success of rookie quarterbacks in recent years, with players like C.J. Stroud and Jayden Daniels coming to mind, a strong case can be made for making Dart the unquestioned starter to start the year.
The fate of head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen in New York is going to be closely tied to the success or failure of Dart under center in 2025.
In an ideal situation, Dart would have time to learn the playbook and be eased into his transition on the field. Unfortunately, this coaching staff may not have that luxury with their jobs on the line in 2025.
Parting ways with Wilson only makes sense if Dart is going to start immediately. This feels unlikely but could become a bit more plausible if Dart shines for the majority of training camp and the NFL preseason.
