The Los Angeles Chargers suffered a surprising blowout defeat at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 11, as they were completely uncompetitive in their 35-6 loss. As if that wasn’t bad enough, things managed to get even worse for linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips after he got punished by the NFL for his actions in this game.
With the game out of hand, Phillips, who is primarily a special teams player, got a bit more time on the field late in the game. However, one play in particular ended up catching the league’s attention, and with the team on their bye week, they opted to loop back around and reprimand Phillips before fully turning their attention to Week 12.
Del’Shawn Phillips Gets Fined by the NFL
Phillips went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, but he latched on with the Atlanta Falcons in training camp. He didn’t make the final roster, and after spending a couple of months as a free agent, he signed to the Buffalo Bills‘ practice squad, which is where he spent the rest of the 2019 season. Phillips eventually made his NFL debut in 2020, before getting released at the conclusion of the season.
Since then, Phillips has turned himself into a reliable special teams player, spending time with the New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens, and Houston Texans before landing with the Chargers for the 2025 campaign. Phillips has played in all 11 of the team’s games so far, racking up 13 tackles and one fumble recovery during his time on the field.
On 4th & 1 late in the fourth quarter, LeQuint Allen Jr. ripped off a 12-yard run for the Jags to effectively end a game that had realistically been over for quite some time. Even if Allen didn’t get the necessary yardage, it wouldn’t have mattered because Phillips was flagged for a facemask penalty on the play. Not only did he cost his team 15 yards (which was ultimately inconsequential given the score of the game), but Phillips also got fined $11,160 for his actions on this play.

Facemask penalties aren’t always intentional, but they are still dangerous plays that can cause injuries. As a result, Phillips racked up a pretty hefty fine for his penalty, and you can bet he will be looking to avoid tackling high moving forward. Realistically speaking, though, the Chargers have several bigger issues from this game that need to be addressed.
The bye week has come at a good time for Los Angeles, as it will allow the team to reset and get healthy for a potential postseason run. Losing to an inconsistent Jacksonville team isn’t a great look, but L.A. still has a lot to play for over its remaining six games. The Chargers will square off against the Las Vegas Raiders when they return to action in Week 13.
