NFL Insider Drops Major News on Ex-Giants QB Daniel Jones

Longstanding quarterback Daniel Jones and the New York Giants official split in November of 2024, so it’s been months since he’s been on the field with the team, but he’s still on the minds of some Giants fans. It’s hard to forget about a guy who had been with the team for roughly six seasons. It’s like dating someone for a long time and then expecting to just forget about them. It’s not going to happen.

So, after cutting ties with the Giants, Jones went to the Minnesota Vikings‘ practice squad but didn’t get playing time with the team, who fell out of the playoffs right away. Now, Jones is with the Indianapolis Colts and gearing up for a season where he may be starting.

The Colts’ other main quarterback, Anthony Richardson, was injured and suffered a sprained AC joint during the Colts’ organized team activities on Thursday, June 5, so he’s currently out of commission. Richardson nursed the same injury his rookie season and wasn’t able to finish the season.

Inside Former New York Giants QB Daniel Jones’ New Gig

Jones signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Indianapolis Colts, and it appears things are going well. In an appearance on “SportsCenter” on Saturday, June 14, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler gave some inside information about how Jones is performing at camp.

“Daniel Jones, making his move a little bit minicamp, taking those first-team reps with Anthony Richardson resting his shoulder,” Fowler said on the show.

He added, “Richardson plans to be back for training camp for that battle. But I was told Jones was a fast processor at the line of scrimmage, good chemistry with his receivers, he was ‘very sharp’ as is told to me in minicamp as the guy. So, it’s going to be fascinating once they hit camp in that battle.”

Daniel Jones’ Chance of Starting With the Colts

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Mina Kimes also commented on Jones and his new gig. “The Colts are having one of the few true quarterback competitions this offseason,” Kimes said on The Mina Kimes Show. “This is a good bar for Richardson to clear, if he can’t clear it… you know, right?”

Kimes then gave a prediction on if Jones will start or not for the Colts. “This feels like- where as earlier in the summer it might have been 55% Richardson, 45% Jones,” Kimes said, “now I’m flipping it, now it feels like 65% Jones, 35% Richardson.”

In a June 11 interview with Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, Jones broke his silence on parting with the Giants, saying that he’s not holding “anything personal against anybody” in the Giants’ camp. He was with the team for nearly six years, though, so it was a long relationship and likely hurts that it ended the way that it did.

“Obviously it’s very competitive, you put your whole life into it, you’re very dedicated and committed to winning, to make sure it goes well on the field, playing at a high level, winning for your teammates, winning for the people in the organization, winning for the fans, and when it doesn’t work out yeah, it is certainly tough,” he told the publication.
