NFL Insider Issues Concerning Terry McLaurin Contract Update — ‘Not Even Close’

Pretty much everything has gone the Washington Commanders‘ way in the past year or so. Well, everything except their contract negotiations with star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. With training camp right around the corner, McLaurin is still holding out in search of a new contract, and the latest upside from NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN won’t exactly ease fans’ concerns.

As he prepares to enter the last season of his current contract, McLaurin hasn’t been shy about expressing his desire for a new deal throughout the offseason. To this point, though, there hasn’t been much progress when it comes to an agreement being reached, and per Fowler’s latest update, it still sounds like these negotiations aren’t in a good place.

Commanders ‘Not Even Close’ to Contract Extension with Terry McLaurin

McLaurin broke into the NFL when the Commanders selected him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and he immediately turned himself into one of the most consistent wide receivers in the NFL. In 2024, McLaurin enjoyed the best season of his career, as he caught 82 passes for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns, earning him the second Pro Bowl selection of his career, as well as a spot on the All-Pro Second Team.

Despite McLaurin’s strong play and the fact that he could hit the open market next offseason, the front office hasn’t appeared to be in much of a rush to hand him a new contract. That resulted in McLaurin skipping mandatory minicamp, while also recently speaking out against Washington’s front office for their handling of his contract negotiations.

The Commanders don’t seem interested in trading McLaurin, despite this high-profile impasse. And yet, they remain far apart when it comes to their star pass catcher’s asking price, which is believed to be around $30 million per season. According to Fowler, Washington is “not even close” to giving McLaurin what he wants, which is certainly a concerning update given how close we are to the start of training camp.

“The question is are they willing to meet this market that’s gotten crazy, where players are making $30-plus million a year at the receiver position?” Fowler said on “SportsCenter.” “My sense is they’re just not even close to that. Terry McLaurin senses that, which is why he’s speaking out publicly. So they have a big gap they’ve gotta try to fill here.”

What Will the Commanders Do About Terry McLaurin’s Contract Situation?

The hope among Commanders fans is that their front office has a plan, because they don’t want to trade him, but they also have shown no signs of giving him the $30 million-per-year deal he’s looking for. Something’s got to give, and with training camp just days away, it’s time for the front office to figure out what their plan is when it comes to McLaurin’s contract.

For now, no progress is being made towards a deal, but there is still time to figure something out. Obviously, Washington will want McLaurin on the field once training camp begins, so it will be worth keeping a close eye on this situation over the next week or so to see if some sort of resolution can be reached.
