The Dallas Cowboys, with a 4-5-1 record, are still in the playoff hunt entering Week 12, but it’s safe to say that things haven’t gone according to plan for them to this point. One of the bright spots through ten games, though, has been the emergence of wide receiver George Pickens as a top-tier option alongside CeeDee Lamb.
Over the offseason, the Cowboys took a bit of a flier on Pickens by picking him up in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pickens has been everything the team could have hoped for, and with his rookie contract set to expire after the 2025 campaign, he’s due for a new deal. Dallas unsurprisingly wants to keep him in town, but there’s a catch that will understandably worry fans of the team.
Cowboys Have Not Discussed Contract Extension with George Pickens
Any talk of contract extensions will likely make Cowboys fans sick to their stomach, considering how the team’s most recent contract debacle saw Micah Parsons get dealt to the Green Bay Packers right before the start of the season. Considering how that deal has blown up in Dallas’ face, you can bet Jerry Jones and company will find a way to keep Pickens around.
In his first three seasons on the field, Pickens was quite productive for the Steelers. The problem was that he carried quite a bit of baggage with him, both on and off the field. Pittsburgh eventually decided that Pickens wasn’t worth the trouble anymore, which led to Dallas acquiring him and a 2027 sixth-round pick in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.
While Lamb missed some time with an ankle injury, Pickens has filled in and quickly proven himself to be one of the top wide receivers in the league, catching 58 passes for 908 yards and seven touchdowns through 10 games. Given that production, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the Cowboys want to keep him in town. The problem, however, is that the two sides have yet to discuss a potential contract extension.
“Just over halfway through his first season in Dallas, as the 4-5-1 Cowboys gear up to play the Eagles on Sunday, this much is clear: Dallas wants to retain Pickens for 2026 and beyond,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported. “As of now, no contract talks have taken place, sources say.”

Considering everything that happened with Parsons, Cowboys fans obviously aren’t going to like this update. However, it’s fairly standard for teams to push contract talks off until the offseason, as they prefer to allow these players to focus on going out and delivering the goods on a weekly basis. At some point, though, Dallas is going to have to step up to the plate in a way it did not with Parsons.
Pickens is going to want an expensive new deal, and rightfully so. The Cowboys could opt to franchise tag him if they need more time, so there are ways for this deal to get across the finish line. Dallas isn’t worrying about that now, though. Instead, it wants Pickens to stay locked in and work on putting together another big game in Week 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
