NFL Insider Speculates That Arizona Cardinals Could Trade Kyler Murray This Offseason

Are Kyler Murray’s days with the Arizona Cardinals numbered?

One NFL insider thinks a ‘divorce’ between Murray and the Cardinals is on the table. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio wrote Monday that Murray and Arizona could be headed towards a separation this offseason.

Murray will miss the Cardinals’ Monday Night Football game against the Dallas Cowboys, but his status with the team is still making headlines ahead of the November 4 trade deadline.

Florio Thinks a Murray Trade Makes the Most Sense in the Offseason

With the NFL trade deadline approaching at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, trade rumors are flying around the league. Teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks have been mentioned the most in trade rumors, but Florio was more interested in what a different bird team might do.

He wrote that he spent some of the weekend asking his NFL sources if the Cardinals would consider trading Kyler Murray at the deadline. Such a blockbuster trade does not appear likely, at least for now.

Murray’s no-trade clause would be an obstacle for any deal. There are also few teams that would even consider an in-season quarterback trade right now. Add in the foot strain that has sidelined him for two games, and there is no reason to expect an imminent trade.

But as for where Kyler Murray plays next season? Florio is not ruling anything out.

“That said, an offseason trade is very realistic. If not likely,” Florio writes. “The current regime did not draft him. The current regime did not sign him to a second contract. The current regime has yet to be able to pick its own quarterback. And with the current regime staring at three years of not making it to the postseason, one way to successful finagle a fourth season will be to lobby ownership for the ability to draft, to sign, or to trade for a new starter.”

It seems like Florio’s NFL contacts don’t see a long future for Kyler Murray in the desert.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon and general manager Monti Ossenfort will likely enter their fourth years in Arizona with no trips to the playoffs. If that happens, they could trade away Murray to shake things up.

Is Trading Kyler Murray Worth the Risk?

The Cardinals’ lack of success under Kyler Murray in the last three seasons makes this a real possibility. While Murray is clearly a solid NFL quarterback, he has yet to prove that he can be a difference-maker capable multiple postseason runs.

Drafting a rookie quarterback is always a crapshoot, but it would provide some hope. Gannon and Ossenfort would need some form of hope to keep their jobs after a third straight losing season.

Kyler Murray is a known commodity as an NFL quarterback. He may not be in Arizona’s future, but he could be just what another team needs to get over the hump.

Florio specifically mentions the Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and Pittsburgh Steelers as potential trade partners in a Murray deal.
