NFL Punishes Packers Player for Actions Against Giants

The New York Giants and Green Bay Packers went at it on Sunday, November 16, and unfortunately, the Giants walked out of their home stadium with another loss, with a 27-20 final score. Now, the Giants are 2-9 for the season, and the Packers’ record rose to 6-3-1.

The Giants are in desperate need for a turnaround, and they’ll see if they can make it happen on Sunday, Nov. 23, with a game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. The Lions are coming off a loss to the Eagles, so they’ll be hungry for a win, but the Giants could surprise everyone and pull off the victory, even with quarterback Jaxson Dart out with a concussion.

But, going back to that Packers game, one Green Bay player is in trouble with the NFL for his actions against the Giants. On Saturdays during the season, the NFL hands down punishments to players for actions taken during the previous week’s games. The NFL states on their website that these actions are “to protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity.” They state that the NFL and NFL Players Association agree on the set of game-related rules violations that may result in accountability measures.

New York Giants Get Payback With Green Bay Packers Player Punished

The NFL routinely sends out punishments for actions that are deemed unnecessary roughness, and they just did it with Green Bay Packers defensive end Colby Wooden. On Saturday, Nov. 22, the NFL announced that they’re fining him $6,789 for a “facemask” violation and “unnecessary roughness,” after his incident in the fourth quarter of the game. No New York Giants players were punished for their actins in the Packers game.

According to the NFL, the funds raised from those fines will go to the Professional Athletes Foundation to “support legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.”

New York Giants and Detroit Lions in NFL Week 12

So, how about the Giants and Lions game? In the NFL’s predictions going into Week 12, the league’s reporting team says that “the Lions’ inconsistency this season is a concern.” But, according to their research, “they have top-five units on both sides of the ball, and I trust Dan Campbell to seize this opportunity to get things lined up for the stretch run.”

The NFL also adds that “the Giants haven’t been able to translate that talent into broader defensive success — on a per-play basis, they’re yielding 5.9 yards (fifth-most) and 0.07 EPA (fourth-most), and they’re fielding the 29th-ranked scoring defense (27.3 ppg per game).” Ouch. That one hurts.

In ESPN’s gameday predictions, Jordan Raanan gives the Giants’ side of the story. “‘Aggressive.’ That is how Giants offensive coordinator Tim Kelly described the Lions’ defense under Kelvin Sheppard,” Raanan states. “Detroit hasn’t allowed a 300-yard passer or a 100-yard rusher this season. Consider that a challenge for veteran quarterback Jameis Winston, who has three 300+ yard games in his last eight starts dating back to last year in Cleveland.”
