NFL Punishes Texans Player Amid Final Decision on Davis Mills Play

While the Houston Texans finally saw justice enacted for a hit on their quarterback, it was a hit on Davis Mills in Week 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, not on C.J. Stroud in Week 9 against the Denver Broncos.

Moreover, Texans cornerback Kamari Lassiter also received an unfortunate notice from the NFL after last week.

In total, the NFL levied nearly $29,000 in fines for the contest.

The NFL fined Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker $17,389 for a “hit on a quarterback” and using his full “bodyweight,” per the NFL Football Operations portal on November 15.

Walker had a would-be sack on Mills during the second quarter on a drive that ended with Texans running back Woody Marks rushing for a touchdown. Instead, he was flagged for “roughing the passer.”

That was before the Texans even began their 26-point rally in the fourth quarter.

They escaped with a 36-29 victory. Mills popped up on the Texans’ injury report to begin Week 11, with the Tennessee Titans on deck.

However, Mills practiced in full all week and does not have an injury designation. The fifth-year former third-round draft pick completed 60% of his passes for 292 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception against the Jaguars.

Mills’ health is paramount amid doubts about Stroud for Week 12 against the Buffalo Bills.

The former third-round draft pick (2021) has a 452-2-1 line on 58.5% completion this season, including his two relief appearances.

Texans CB Kamari Lassiter Tagged With Fine

Lassiter’s fine was $11,382 for “unsportsmanlike conduct” after they found he was “taunting” during the second quarter of the contest.

The former second-round draft pick (2024), Lassiter, combined with linebacker E.J. Speed for a tackle on Jaguars running back Bhayshul Tuten that resulted in a dropped pass from quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

An animated Lassiter then said something to the downed Tuten.

The back-and-forth exchange continued after Tuten got back to his feet and the two players returned to their respective huddles.

Lassiter drew a flag during the game, which all but guaranteed he would hear from the NFL. The play happened on the Jaguars’ first possession that began in the second quarter, a drive that ended in a Cam Little field goal, extending their lead to 20-3.

The Texans outscored the Jaguars 33-9 the rest of the way.

Fine Mars Otherwise Stellar Story for Texans

Neither fine directly benefits the Texans, but Lassiter’s is an unfortunate footnote to an otherwise impressive comeback from Houston. Jacksonville scored its final 9 points of the game in the third quarter.

The Texans dominated the final frame, and head coach DeMeco Ryans was elated after the game.

Ryans said the Texans “finished with the knockout punch there at the end that we needed.”

“This game, all right, should do a lot when guys watch the film, and they can see the things we can even clean up in this game where we weren’t clean or bad things happen. And I just look at the game as I look at life. It’s like, bad things are going to happen. Do you hang your head and go run and hide? Do you quit, do you give up? No. You got to keep punching in life. In football, you got to keep punching,” Ryans told reporters on November 9.

“That’s what this game showed today. Man, you just have to keep playing with heart, playing with resilience. And, hopefully, the film shows our guys proof that we can battle and win in any type of game.”
