NFL star Nick Bosa fined for wearing Make America Great Again hat on TV

Nick Bosa showed his support for Donald Trump during an NBC broadcast (NBC)

San Francisco 49ers star Nick Bosa has been fined $11,255 (£8,710) by the NFL for wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat on live TV.

The 27-year-old crashed a post-game interview on NBC after the win over the Dallas Cowboys on October 27 and pointed to the white hat which read in gold, ‘Make America Great Again’, on his head.

The slogan has been a regular feature in both of Donald Trump’s United States election campaigns.

Earlier this week, Trump secured victory over Kamala Harris to return to the White House.

Bosa has now received a fine from the NFL for the incident but will not receive a ban from playing, with the 49ers due to play the Buccaneers on Sunday.

When asked earlier this week about a receiving a punishment for wearing the hat, Bosa said: ‘If it comes, it comes.

‘I don’t think my position on speaking about it is going to change. Clearly, the nation spoke and we got what we got.’

Bosa’s mother, Cheryl, endorsed her son’s message as she reposted a user’s Instagram story of the clip with the message, ‘Cheryl Bosa you raised your boy right!! #BOSAFORTRUMP.’

Rule 5, Section 4, Article 8 the NFL rulebook prohibits players from wearing clothing which includes a political message:

The rule states: ‘The League will not grant permission for any club or player to wear, display, or otherwise convey messages, through helmet decals, arm bands, jersey patches, mouthpieces, or other items affixed to game uniforms or equipment, which relate to political activities or causes, other non-football events, causes or campaigns, or charitable causes or campaigns.’
