The Dallas Stars are in a bit of a cap crunch. Dallas has signed Matt Duchene, Nils Lundkvist, and Mavrik Bourque to contract extensions. As a result of this, they have less than $3 million in salary cap space. This has led to speculation around the futures of players like Jason Robertson.
Dallas has already made a cap dump trade. The Stars sent Mason Marchment to the Seattle Kraken a few days ago. That cap space has already been used up, though. And they need to create more in order to sign the rest of their important players.
A Robertson trade would be more than a cap dump, though. The Stars winger is an exciting top-six winger in the prime of his career. He would generate a massive haul, especially in a seller’s market.
On Saturday, we learned a bit more about these discussions. The Stars are willing to hear other teams out, according to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun. However, Dallas is not actively trying to move his contract.
“After making several calls around the league this past week, here’s what I make of the Jason Robertson situation: The Stars aren’t actively shopping him but are listening on him to educate themselves on the market and what teams might be willing to do at some point,” LeBrun wrote for The Athletic on Saturday.
Stars Could Keep Jason Robertson This Summer
Bruce Bennett/Getty ImagesDallas Stars forward Jason Robertson could still remain in Texas despite trade rumors.
LeBrun made sure to note that this does not mean Dallas will for sure trade the 25-year-old winger. The Stars plan to ask Robertson’s agent about his contract demands this summer. This will determine is future in the Lone Star State.
“Robertson is set to be a restricted free agent on July 1, 2026. He can be extended as early as this summer. If the contract is fair, Dallas will likely extend him and keep him. But if the ask is perceived as too high without much wiggle room, it might get interesting as far as circling back to teams that reached out,” LeBrun wrote.
Robertson is signed through next season at $7.75 million. After the 2025-26 campaign, the Stars winger enters restricted free agency. Dallas retains his rights, but he will need a new contract, which could see him receive a significant raise.
When a Robertson Decision Could be Made
All of this discussion drives up intrigue in the Stars offseason. Fans will certainly want to see a quick resolution either way. Unfortunately, it does not appear as if this will be the case.
“The market interest is already pretty robust for Robertson, as it should be. Either way, though, I don’t see a quick resolution in the coming week or two. This is a slow-play situation where he’s either extended by the end of the summer or traded in August,” LeBrun wrote.
This is going to be a storyline fans will need to monitor heading into the summer. Dallas has some tough decisions to make. Let’s see if they decide to pull the trigger on a Robertson trade before the 2025-26 season begins.
