Axed Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison has managed to keep a sense of humor after being dismissed from his job.
Harrison made a hilarious update to his Instagram bio on Tuesday, writing “Unemployed” under “Girl Dad” — as seen in a screengrab below.
The agent-turned-executive was fired on Tuesday morning, less than 12 hours after the Mavericks suffered a 116-114 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks at home. Incidentally, Luka Doncic scored 38 points and led the Los Angeles Lakers to a win on the same night, causing Mavericks fans to further blame Harrison for trading the Slovenian star to a rival Western Conference team — for a perennially injured player in Anthony Davis.
What Next for Mavericks?
According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont regrets green-lighting the Doncic-Davis trade and wanted to make an example out of Harrison. He therefore named Assistant GMs Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi in interim roles to run the basketball operations until Harrison’s successor is finalized.
“The situation in Dallas had reached a point of being untenable,” wrote MacMahon.
“Dumont had lost trust in Harrison, as evidenced by the governor’s involvement in the decision to hold off on Davis’ return over the weekend, siding with the Mavs’ medical staff’s desire to not risk aggravating the calf injury. The uncertainty hanging over Harrison’s head loomed like a black cloud over the entire organization.”
The report detailed Mark Cuban’s role in the decision, noting that the former majority owner of the Mavericks was actively involved in finding the Harrison’s successor.
“According to sources, Cuban hopes to hire Dennis Lindsey, the former Utah vice president and general manager who is the second-highest-ranking member of the Detroit Pistons‘ front office,” wrote MacMahon.
“Lindsey served as a senior adviser for the Mavs during the 2023-24 season, when he had input on personnel moves that helped build the Finals roster around Doncic.”
Mavericks Regret Trading Luka
In an open letter to the Mavericks fan base, Dumont stated that the team’s 3-8 start to the 2025-26 season was unacceptable and changes were forthcoming.
“No one associated with the Mavericks organization is happy with the start of what we all believed would be a promising season,” Dumont wrote. “You have high expectations for the Mavericks, and I share them with you. When the results don’t meet expectations, it’s my responsibility to act. I’ve made the decision to part ways with General Manager Nico Harrison.
“Though the majority of the 2025-26 season remains to be played, and I know our players are deeply committed to a winning culture, the decision was critical to moving our franchise forward in a positive direction. … Our goal is to return to winning basketball in Dallas and win championships. Our family is committed to that mission and to continuing to invest in Dallas and the Mavericks’ future.”
Meanwhile, Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green felt that Nico Harrison was unfairly fired, citing the injuries of Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis.
“Y’all just wanna go point the finger at Nico because that was a storyline. Now let’s make that a storyline again,” Green said on his podcast. “That [expletive] is whack to me. So, next year, they come back, their full team that Nico intended to be out there, and they have success. Then what?”
