Oilers Could Have $26.8M Goalie on their Radar: Insider

The Edmonton Oilers could have Pittsburgh Penguins netminder Tristan Jarry on their radar, insider Jeff Marek believes.

Jarry could have become expendable in Pittsburgh after the Penguins traded for Arturs Silovs earlier this week.

As such, the Penguins now have three NHL-level goalies in Silovs, Jarry, and Joel Blomqvist. That situation could prompt the Penguins to choose to move on from one of the three aforementioned netminders.

Jarry could be the odd man out, given the struggles and inconsistency he has faced over the last couple of seasons. So, a change of scenery could truly benefit Jarry. Plus, the Oilers continue to search for another goalie option.

That situation makes Jarry a potential option for the Oilers. But as Marek noted:

“If you wonder about Tristan Jarry, that would take a big chomp from Kyle Dubas to make it work for the Edmonton Oilers.”

Marek’s comments underscore two things. First, Jarry will be entering the third year of a $26.88 million contract. The deal carries a $5.375 million cap hit. As it stands, the Oilers have just $226K in cap space. So, making the math work could involve salary retention by the Penguins.

Second, if the Penguins retain as much as 50% of Jarry’s salary, the cost to the Oilers would be much higher. Perhaps Penguins GM Kyle Dubas might push for a first-round pick. Edmonton does not have its first-rounder in 2026 but does own its first-round picks in 2027 and 2028.

If the Oilers and Penguins could work out a deal involving Tristan Jarry, the trade could be a win-win for both sides.

Check out Marek’s comments from the 14-minute mark onwards:

A Fresh Start with Oilers Could Help Jarry

The Penguins picked Tristan Jarry with their second-round selection in the 2013 NHL Draft. The Penguins were looking for the heir apparent to Marc-Andre Fleury and felt Jarry could be the one.

Fleury remained in Pittsburgh until the 2016-17 season before departing in the 2017 expansion draft. That move left Jarry as the presumptive starting goalie. But he never really stood out as the team’s unquestioned starter.

Jarry started 58 games in 2021-22 and then 47 in 2022-23, showing some positive signs. That led the team to sign him to that five-year extension.

Three years into it, the Penguins are looking to move on from Jarry. The 30-year-old was sent down to the AHL last season after an up-and-down start to the season. In the end, it seems that the Silovs trade sealed Jarry’s future.

But in Edmonton, Jarry could get another kick at the can. A fresh start on a Stanley Cup contender instead of a rebuilding team could do wonders for Jarry’s confidence and boost the Oilers at a critical position.

Edmonton Is Running out of Time

Everyone in Oilers Nation is expecting the team to make some sort of move at the goalie position. Rolling it back with Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard this upcoming season would be seen as inaction.

While Skinner and Pickard were not necessarily bad during the playoffs last season, the perception is that the club needs to upgrade. However, Jarry wouldn’t necessarily be an upgrade. He isn’t the legitimate number-one goalie that the Oilers need.

But just because he isn’t that goalie now doesn’t mean he won’t ever be. It could be that a change of scenery leads Jarry to fulfill his potential.
