Oregon’s Dan Lanning Shares Interesting Message About the CFP Ahead of Texas Tech Game

The highly anticipated College Football Playoffs are finally underway, and round one is officially in the books. The Oregon Ducks handled James Madison in their home playoff game with a 51-34 win over the Dukes. That means Oregon will go on to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Orange Bowl.

The Orange Bowl is an annual bowl game held in Miami, Florida, which happens to be rather far from the homes of both the Oregon Ducks and Texas Tech Red Raiders. Oregon’s head coach, Dan Lanning, has a particular issue with this part of the CFP scheduling. Ahead of the No.5 Ducks’ matchup against fourth-ranked Texas Tech, Lanning shared his thoughts on the neutral-site matchup.

Dan Lanning Shares Strong Message About the CFP

Dan Lanning spoke with reporters about the Ducks’ upcoming matchup, and he believes that Texas Tech should host Oregon instead of both teams’ traveling to Miami to square off:

“The way we do playoffs in college football is messed up… in my opinion, this game should be played at Tech,” Lanning said. “There should be a home-field advantage for them.”

In a matchup like this, where both universities are so far away from the actual game location, it’s fair to assume that Texas Tech doesn’t benefit all that much from it being at a neutral site. This should help the cause of the Ducks, but what makes Lanning’s comments so interesting is admitting the biggest game of Oregon’s season should be played on the road, instead of a more favorable matchup at a neutral site.

However, Lanning has experienced Texas Tech’s situation before, just a year ago. In 2024, the Ducks went 13-0, and earned a top overall, but proceeded to get destroyed by Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

Oregon Getting Ready to Take on Texas Tech

Dan Lanning isn’t the only college football coach upset with the playoff format. Other coaches across the college landscape have voiced their various complaints and such.

While the Ducks seemingly won pretty easily against JMU, they did still give up 34 points, which Lanning was upset with, and said in his presser that their performance was not up to Oregon’s standards.

Things will not get easier as they get ready to face a Texas Tech offense that is very formidable, and doesn’t reside in the Sun Belt.

Lanning fully understands the task at hand, and it will take a full team effort to take down the Red Raiders. Texas Tech went 12-1 this season and enjoyed a first-round bye after winning the Big 12.

The Capital One Orange Bowl is set for noon on New Year’s Day.
