The New York Giants were featured in a wild seven-team blockbuster trade proposal that was suggested by A-to-Z Sports.
Modeled after the first-ever seven-team NBA trade that occurred on July 6, the writers of A-to-Z Sports put together a seven-team agreement of their own. Despite all the movement around them, the Giants’ portion of the trade broke down pretty simply:
- Giants get: Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs and a 2026 5th-round pick from the Minnesota Vikings.
- Giants lose: Edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.
For those unfamiliar with his game, Doubs was a 2022 fourth-round pick who quickly turned himself into a Packers starter despite WR being a crowded position group in Green Bay.
Doubs has yet to truly break out in terms of yardage, with two 600-plus-yard campaigns marking his career highs, but he has developed into a red zone threat with 16 career touchdowns in the regular season and the playoffs combined.
While the rest of the moving parts that A-to-Z Sports pitched were mostly for fun and somewhat unrealistic, this scenario did bring up an interesting Giants talking point.
If NYG general manager Joe Schoen was able to land a playmaker like Doubs and future draft compensation for Thibodeaux, should they do it? Let’s tackle that aspect of this complexly creative proposal.
Giants Trade Idea Poses Key Question: Should NYG Add Wide Receiver at the Expense of Kayvon Thibodeaux?
There have been a lot of NFL sites and writers suggesting that the Giants should trade Thibodeaux. After all, first-round prospect Abdul Carter lit the world on fire at OTAs and minicamp, and Big Blue also spent big money on Brian Burns.
Eventually, they’ll have to pay Thibodeaux if they want to keep him, and that includes a fully guaranteed $14.751 million fifth-year option in 2026.
Although the Giants have yet to even hint that they have any interest in moving Thibodeaux, the obvious theory here is that they could flip a strength for an area of weakness. While also getting something in return for Thibodeaux before he becomes too expensive to trade.
The larger question is: Does wide receiver really stand out as a major weakness?
The Giants are set to line up Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton and Wan’Dale Robinson as their three starting wide receivers. Former third-round pick Jalin Hyatt also put together the best spring of his career and appears poised for a more impactful role in 2025, plus the team added veteran Lil’Jordan Humphrey in free agency and saw multiple UDFAs flash talent during the early days of camp.
If you trade for Doubs, that basically means you’ve lost faith in one of Slayton, Robinson or Hyatt, and that just doesn’t appear to be the case at this time.
On the flip side, keeping Thibodeaux could give the Giants a truly elite edge rusher rotation that runs four deep (Burns, Carter, Thibodeaux, Chauncey Golston). Along with superstar defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, this fivesome could give NYG a unique leg up on the competition.
In truth, that rare pass-rusher advantage might just be more valuable than adding another wide receiver.
Giants Do Not Need Another Wide Receiver Before Training Camp
If Hyatt stumbles during training camp or the Giants suffer an injury at the position, then you could certainly make the argument that they should sign or trade for another wide receiver.
As of July 8, however, it’s just not true.
Keep in mind for a moment that Russell Wilson is expected to elevate the current WR corps more than the combination of Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito. No matter what your opinion is of Wilson, it’s hard to believe he’ll be worse than those four, meaning the above statement should prove accurate.
If that’s the case, is a player like Doubs or Gabe Davis that much better than Slayton, or even Hyatt?
Maybe, maybe not. But the Giants could always pursue someone like that early in the season if training camp goes poorly. For now, their best bet is to hold steady at the position.
