Packers Linked to Veteran Free Agent Who Could Come at Bargain Price

The Green Bay Packers still have several needs throughout their roster.

They lost multiple starters in free agency, particularly on defense. Position groups such as defensive line and cornerback not only need quality starters, but depth behind them.

The Packers will address many of those issues during the 2026 NFL Draft, but will be without a selection in the first round after acquiring edge rusher Micah Parsons last year. Green Bay could give itself more flexibility in the draft by acquiring another free agent or two.

Green Bay Packers Urged to Sign Free Agent Pass Rusher Leonard Floyd

While choosing free agents that could give each NFL team a boost, Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report landed on Floyd for the Packers.

“The Green Bay Packers have major issues on the edge. It’s not just a matter of the ACL tear that ended Micah Parsons’ 2025 season—and leaves his availability for the early portion of the 2026 campaign in doubt. Or the fact that the Packers dealt Rashan Gary to the Dallas Cowboys. Or the loss of Kingsley Enagbare in free agency. The Packers also don’t have a first-round pick this year as part of the Parsons deal. The Pack needs bodies—and while the team has $22 million and change in cap space, they also have needs at other positions. Green Bay needs to be frugal here. At 33 years of age, Leonard Floyd isn’t going to be especially expensive—especially after managing just 3.5 sacks in 15 games with the Atlanta Falcons in 2025. But in five straight seasons from 2020-2024, Floyd logged at least 8.5 sacks—including a pair of seasons with double-digits in that category.”

Floyd is more of a rotational player than an every down starter at this stage of his career, but he brings a lot of experience to the table and should come at a bargain price. Floyd was a first-round draft pick by the Chicago Bears in 2016, and has played for five teams throughout his 10-year NFL career.

Signing Floyd doesn’t take drafting a pass rusher with a high draft pick off the table. If Floyd is paired with a young player that can keep him fresh and his snaps limited, he could still make an impact. Floyd has 70 sacks, 431 total tackles, five forced fumbles, and 16 passes defensed on his resume.

What Position Groups Should Packers Attack During the Draft?

As mentioned above, another position that needs a big upgrade is cornerback. Fortunately, this year’s draft class is considered to be very deep with quality corners, potentially enabling Green Bay to find a starting caliber one in the middle rounds.

The Packers could also use a run-stuffing defensive tackle after trading Colby Wooden. Unlike cornerback, this year’s class isn’t very deep at defensive tackle, so they may need to use their second round pick on one if they want someone who can make a difference right off the bat.

On offense, the Packers could use a swing tackle and backup running back. Jordan Morgan will now take over as the full-time starting left tackle with Rasheed Walker out of town, so he and right tackle Zach Tom will need a quality backup. Emanuel Wilson is also gone, and former third-round pick MarShawn Lloyd has been injury plagued.
