The Green Bay Packers are in a good spot at this point heading into the mid-point of the season.
Jordan Love had on Sunday what offensive coordinator, Adam Stenavich called “one of the best games he’s had since he’s been here” in the team’s 35-25 victory over the Aaron Rodgers-lead Pittsburgh Steelers, and this season as a whole has massively cut down on his mistakes and errors in the passing game.
Love has thrown just two interceptions through seven games this year; in comparison to 10 picks through his first seven games in 2024 and 8 in 2023; and his 112.8 quarterback rating is on track to be the best single-season QBR of his career, with him currently ranking 5th amongst signal callers in the league this season.
However, the team should think long and hard about the future of their “Jordan Love insurance” – i.e., the backup quarterback. And one name who could be worth looking at – and is the subject of this in-house trade proposal – is the Indianapolis Colts‘ former 4th overall pick, Anthony Richardson, who lost his starting spot to the high-flying Daniel Jones.
Packers Will Likely Need A New QB2 Next Season
Right now, that spot is being manned by Malik Willis, who played very well when thrust into the action in 6 games last season, which included going 2/2 in his two starts against the Titans and the Colts.
But Willis’ rookie contract is up at the end of the season, where he will likely be paid to be a high-end backup, or potentially a bridge starter that will allow him to compete to be the top-dog in another franchise.
And given the lack of opportunity the Packers can offer to the former Liberty University man, both in terms of their cash-strapped financial situation post-Micah Parsons deal, and their clear #1 starter at QB in Love, it feels like, more likely than not, Green Bay will have to look for a new second-string quarterback.
Anthony Richardson Could Be A Great Fit For LaFleur’s Ability With QBs.
Whilst many teams choose to go with older veterans to serve behind their franchise QBs, the Packers could instead look to go with a more high ceiling-type player. Matt LaFleur is undoubtedly one of the best offensive coaches in the league, who has shown time and time again his ability to get the most out of the quarterbacks that have been placed before him.
Simply look at what he did with Willis – and indeed Love – both raw talents who were able to improve massively through his coaching and playcalling.
Richardson is the kind of raw talent that LaFleur would love to sink his teeth into, and could become another successful project for the Packers’ head coach.
Although the floor would indeed be low, the potential payoff (high compensatory pick in 2027, trade midseason in 2026) could be enormous. And with his contract only set to expire in 2027, LaFleur and co. would have a full year and a half to get him going.
Green Bay Packers receive:Â Anthony Richardson
Indianapolis Colts receive:Â 2026 sixth round pick, 2027 seventh round pick.
