The Carolina Panthers are once again off to a poor start to the season. Since 2017, the Panthers have missed the playoffs every year, so the team’s struggles are not unusual for the fan base.
However, one Panthers fan podcast has reached its last straw, and they are withdrawing from discussing the team in an official capacity moving forward.
Bleacher Report posted about “MeowMix,” a Panthers fan-hosted podcast by two people named Stephen and Jerry, described on their YouTube channel as “A Carolina Panthers Podcast hosted by two die-hard Panthers fans. We deep dive on Panthers games, rumors, and news, as well as take a look around the league through a Panther’s colored lens.”
After many years of enduring the pain that has been a persistent part of being a Panthers fan over the last decade, last Sunday’s game might’ve broken them for good.
Blowout Loss Was the Final Straw
Last Sunday against the New England Patriots, the Panthers put on a lackluster performance on both sides of the ball in a 42-13 blowout defeat. The loss’s disappointment was only amplified further by the same team defeating their division rivals, the Atlanta Falcons, 30-0, the week before.
Inconsistency and underachievement finally caught up to the MeowMix podcast, as they tweeted out from their account expressing frustrations with the organization during the game.
“This team hasn’t been competitive since Tepper bought the team. At what point do fans quit caring? I for one am about to. I have a family that I could do things with instead of watching and reporting on this team,” MeowMix said.
After a few days of basking in the embarrassment of the loss, they issued a statement announcing the end of their podcast. In the statement, they discussed how it was no longer worth spending hours away from their families analyzing and discussing the games, and they would strictly be watching as fans for the rest of the season.
“We bleed black and blue and desperately want this team to be competitive. We will just be cheering the team on as fans for the rest of the season instead of podcasters,” MeowMix said in their statement.
While MeowMix wants the team to be competitive again, nobody wants the Panthers to regain their competitiveness more than the coaches and players themselves.
Dave Canales Searching for Answers
Panthers head coach Dave Canales is coaching for his job the rest of the season. After starting 1-3 in a season where the Panthers were expected to show some improvement, the team needs to demonstrate signs of life and competitiveness for the rest of the season.
Darrin Gantt of Panthers.com wrote about how Canales is evaluating the team and trying to determine how to prepare it more effectively.
“I have to look at how I’m preparing the team, how we’re going about our work,” Canales said. “I have to look at that and compete to find an edge to get these guys to work together to focus, so we can get the execution that we’re seeing happen in our processes, but this is the only way to work through these things is to go right back to work, to attack it head-on.”
The Panthers will take on the Miami Dolphins, another 1-3 team with a coach fighting to keep their job next year. It will be another chance for the Panthers to get back on track and restore some of the faith in the fan base that has been lost.
