Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes may be keeping his focus on the field, but his father — former MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes Sr. — is making headlines of his own. After a Facebook post criticizing Kansas City’s season went viral, Mahomes Sr. publicly pushed back, telling fans he’s willing to take “any bet” that the Chiefs will still make the playoffs.
The exchange unfolded on social media after longtime Chiefs fan and content creator Shane Williams posted a lengthy critique about the team’s struggles, coaching decisions and overall trajectory. His post — which ran through everything from Andy Reid’s play-calling to the defensive line’s performance — ended with a bold prediction: the Chiefs would not make the postseason in 2025.
Mahomes Sr. had a different message for doubters. Commenting directly under the post, he wrote, “I’ll take any bet that anyone wants to make that we make the playoffs. So just DM and let me know.”
Chiefs Still Have a Path to the Playoffs Despite 5–5 Record
Kansas City enters Week 12 at 5–5 after a narrow 22–19 loss to the Denver Broncos. While the slow start has raised alarms among fans, playoff projections still leave the door open. According to The Athletic’s playoff calculator, the Chiefs currently hold a 57% chance to make the postseason, despite fallen odds from previous weeks.
Kansas City will host the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday before facing the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving. From there, the Chiefs will see the Houston Texans, Los Angeles Chargers, Tennessee Titans, Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders to close out the season.
Per the projection model:
- Winning out gives Kansas City a near-certain playoff berth.
- Losing to either the Colts or Cowboys impacts their chances by only about 1%.
- Losing two games lowers their odds but does not eliminate them.
- The AFC West title is still possible, but Kansas City no longer controls its own destiny.
Patrick Mahomes Reflects on Personal Family Struggles as His Father Shows Public Support
Mahomes Sr.’s confident playoff bet comes months after he and his son opened up about their relationship on ESPN’s “Chiefs Kingdom.” In the August episode, Mahomes addressed his father’s 2024 DWI arrest, which occurred just one week before Super Bowl LVIII.
“It became a story, and so I had to answer questions about it,” Mahomes said on the show. “I think just knowing that it hurt me woke him up to know that, like, you can’t keep doing the same things.”
Mahomes Sr., 55, recalled the moment with regret. “For him to have to answer questions about me was probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever been through in my life,” he said. He added that he immediately called his son afterward: “I told him, ‘I’m sorry that it’s taking away from your time and taking away from your focus.’”
Brittany Mahomes also spoke about the emotional impact on the family, saying she believes the arrest made Mahomes Sr. realize that “his kids and grandkids are watching.”
Since then, Mahomes Sr. has publicly shared updates about his sobriety, posting on Facebook on October 4 that he was “20 months and continuing,” writing, “Thanks to my supporting cast. The fam. Love y’all.”
