Patrick Mahomes Gets Another Dose of Bad News After Chiefs Loss

On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs dropped another game, this time to the Dallas Cowboys with a 31-28 final score.

The game was a must-win for the Chiefs, who has been struggling all season. As of Monday, December 1, Kansas City has a 6-6 record and is third in the AFC West. They’re used to being on top, so it’s a strange place for the Kansas City Chiefs to be, but that doesn’t mean they’re totally out of the playoff picture.

“If we’re going to make the playoffs, we’re going to have to win them all,” Mahomes said following the team’s loss to the Cowboys. “And that’s got to be the mindset we step into the building when we get back.”

He added that the team’s ceiling is only the final game. “We got all the same guys, we’ve added players, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to go out and do it on every single week on a week-in, week-out basis,” he said.

Not Much of a Silver Lining for Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes

Mahomes is usually a favorite for MVP, but according to research from Peter Dewey of SI, he’s way down in the odds this season. The Chiefs’ loss to the Cowboys was pretty much the nail in the casket for Mahomes’ shot at getting MVP.

In the report out on Monday, December 1, Matthew Stafford, despite the Rams‘ loss last weekend, and Drake Maye are still the most likely to score the honor. Mahomes slipped to the seventh most likely quarterback to earn the award.

Dewey even says that Mahomes’ case for MVP “appears to be done,” adding, “The Kansas City Chiefs are far from a sure thing to make the playoffs in the AFC, and that appears to have ended Patrick Mahomes’ MVP case.”

He continues, “Barring an insane finish to the regular season, Mahomes isn’t going to capture the MVP for the third time.”

Kansas City Chiefs Fall Hard After Loss to Cowboys

On Monday, December 30, the Cowboys Wire on Yahoo Sports released its tally of the Week 14 power rankings, and it’s not good news for the Chiefs. They’re down to No. 15 from No. 12.

So, the Chiefs once again host a must-win game in Week 14, this time up against the Houston Texans in a must-win game in Week 14. The good news is that they’ve gotten rest, because by Sunday, December 7, they will have rested for 10 games.

As Matt Conner of Arrowhead Addict notes, “At this point, the Chiefs need to run the table to have a chance at a playoff spot, placing immense pressure on the roster to perform at a high level every week.” He continued that “with no room for margin, the Chiefs need plenty of good news, and they’re hoping for some in the form of positive injury updates in the next week.”

It’s time for the Kansas City Chiefs to do major soul-searching and come out with a real game plan to contain the Texans on Sunday.
