Patrick Mahomes, Wife Brittany React to Stunning Upset During Bye Week

While the Kansas City Chiefs‘ 28-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills last week still stings, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, had the perfect bye week distraction.

After Mahomes, the guest picker on ESPN’s “College GameDay” program on Saturday, traveled to Lubbock to watch his alma mater, Texas Tech, hand BYU their first loss of the season, the couple returned to Kansas City for the NWSL quarterfinal playoff game.

Brittany, a former soccer player, is a founding co-owner of the Kansas City Current, along with owners Chris and Angie Long. Mahomes joined as a co-owner in January 2023.

The Current, the No. 1-ranked team in the league, faced Gotham FC (No. 8) on November 9. Few believed Gotham had a chance against the Current, as Kansas City was deemed the runaway favorite to win the NWSL championship.

The Current became the fastest team to win the NWSL Shield and broke several league records during the regular season. They scored the most points (65), most wins (21), most shutouts (16), consecutive shutout minutes (869), multi-goal wins (15), and more.

Even with back-to-back Golden Boot winner Temwa Chawinga ruled out with a hip injury, the Current were still favored to defeat Gotham with ease. However, the Current’s incredible season came to a stunning end on Sunday, November 9.

Joining Mahomes and Brittany at CPKC Stadium on Sunday, Chiefs offensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and “Ted Lasso” star Jason Sudeikis.

They all watched in person as the Gotham defeated the Current 2-1 in extra time, successfully eliminating the club from the playoffs. After the heartbreaking upset, Brittany shared the team’s “Thank you” message to fans on her Instagram Stories.

While their playoff run is over, the Current won’t be off the pitch for long. The club will represent the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the first-ever North American edition of the World Sevens Football (W7F) Tournament in December. The teams will compete for a $5 million prize pool, “one of the largest in women’s football – and a broadcast partnership with DAZN.”

While this season didn’t end with a championship title, the future remains bright in Kansas City. Four years after the Current played their first game of the 2021 season, they’ve become the second-most valuable franchise in the NWSL. Despite being the fourth-smallest market team, the Current owns the second-highest valuation of $275 million.

After opening CPKC Stadium, the first premier sports venue built primarily for a women’s sports team, Forbes reported that the KC Current generated a league-high $36 million in revenue in 2024.

Over the summer, the Longs announced a $52 million investment in a three-tiered expansion of the team’s facilities in Riverside, Missouri. They broke ground in July on building Riverside Stadium, a 35,000-square-foot performance center, and a pitch expansion.
