Patrick Mahomes Won’t Like Latest Report on Chiefs’ OC Matt Nagy

Heading into Week 14 of the 2025 NFL campaign, the Kansas City Chiefs find themselves in a position that they have never encountered during the Patrick Mahomes era. With a 6-6 record, the Chiefs simply have not been as dominant as we’ve expected them to be, and they are at risk of missing the playoffs entirely if they can’t get their act together soon.

Despite their overall struggles, some things have gone right for this team, as their offense has generally remained productive, even though they began the year without several key playmakers. While Mahomes is obviously a big part of that, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has also begun to receive his due praise, and it could lead to him receiving some interest for several head coach openings over the upcoming offseason.

Matt Nagy Emerging as Top Head Coach Candidate

Nagy is in his second stint with the Chiefs, as he previously worked with the team as their quarterbacks coach from 2013 to 2015 before taking over as their offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017. While Mahomes didn’t play in 2017, he got to experience what it was like operating within a Nagy-led offense.

After a failed stint as the Chicago Bears‘ head coach from 2018 to 2021, Nagy returned to Kansas City, initially working as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach in 2022 before returning to his role as the team’s offensive coordinator. During this four-year stint, Nagy has helped the Chiefs win a pair of Super Bowls, even though the offense has not been as effective as it was to begin Mahomes’ career.

That’s due in large part to the makeup of the roster around Mahomes, as it does not feature as much firepower as it once did. With that in mind, what Nagy has managed to do with the team’s offense this season has caught quite a bit of attention. And according to a recent report, it sounds like Nagy is beginning to generate some interest when it comes to his quest to land his second head coaching job in the NFL.

“Expect Matt Nagy to garner interest in this upcoming coaching cycle,” Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported.

Matt Nagy’s Potential Departure Would Be a Big Loss for the Chiefs

Nagy has helped coax quite a bit out of Kansas City’s offense over the past few years, and his work with Mahomes and the rest of the team could earn him another shot at being a head coach in the NFL. There’s no guarantee he’ll leave, but if he does, that would create a big void on Andy Reid’s coaching staff that would have to be filled quickly.

For the time being, the Chiefs’ main concern involves finding a way to get back in the win column after suffering a tough loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. A matchup against the red-hot Houston Texans awaits on Sunday Night Football, though, so it’s clear that this task is going to be a bit more difficult than K.C. would like it to be. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday night.
