Patriots Drake Maye Talks Mike Vrabel’s Mustache After Win Over Giants

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye heeds head coach Mike Vrabel’s messages, and the second-year quarterback supports Vrabel’s ongoing style.

Vrabel’s growing mustache has been obvious from the sideline  in recent weeks, amid the Patriots’ league-best 10-game winning streak. New England added to the streak on Monday night with a 33-15 win over the New York Giants. The mustache is ultimately about supporting men’s health, and Maye was more than happy to tout Vrabel for an additional case on Monday, NFL Coach of the Year.

“I thought it looked good. It was for a great cause,” Maye told reporters afterward. “The award, I think he’d probably say the same thing, (indiscernible) each and every week, and that stuff will come.”

“He’s got my vote, and he’s got a lot of people’s vote. He’s got everybody’s vote in this organization and in that locker room, and I’m sure across the league,” Maye added.

Maye has been a central part of the Patriots’ unexpected resurgence under Vrabel. New England went 4-13 for back-to-back seasons before Vrabel took the job, and expectations were still low for this year even after loading up on free agents  with a league-best salary cap situation and a boatload of draft picks.

Maye, an MVP candidate, did more of what he has done all season — pile on yards and touchdowns. He went 24-31 for 282 yards and a touchdown, versus no interceptions, against the Giants on Monday.

During the 10-game winning streak, Maye has 2,627 yards passing for 18 touchdowns versus four picks. Overall, Maye has 3,412 yards for 23 touchdowns versus six interceptions in 13 games.

“Shoot, I wish it was all me. There’s a lot of people in this locker room, this organization, that play a big role in us winning games,” Maye said. “And shoot, just like you, showing up every day and making fun of you all for being in the locker room on a Friday asking us questions after practice, these guys are the same thing.”

“They show up every day, and they want to get better. And just proud of the guys and this team we have and love being around them,” Maye added.

Drake Maye Talks Putting the Game Away

Maye was a child when the Giants played spoiler for two Patriots Super Bowls in the 2010s, but he didn’t let the Giants get too close to playing spoiler on Monday after cutting the score to 15 points in the fourth quarter. Giants running back Devin Singletary scored on a 22-yard run, which cut the Patriots lead to 30-15.

Maye led the Patriots to one more scoring drive of 12 plays for 58 yards, which ended on kicker Andy Borregales’ leg for a 23-yard field goal. New England’s defense meanwhile, held the Giants to a punt and a turnover on downs.

“Yeah, it was big. It was big in the second half. We knew that they had a good offense and can move the ball,” Maye said. “So, we had to put a drive together, put one down at the end to kick a field goal.”

“Like I said, we won’t be satisfied with that. Gotta try to punch it in, get the game really out of reach,” Maye added. “But our defense is big, made big stops in the fourth quarter all year long. And just proud of these guys, like I said, and the good Lord has treated us right, and we have to keep going. So, thank you, guys.
