“M-V-P! M-V-P!”
Those chants have been loud for Drake Maye this season as the second-year quarterback has remained among the top candidates for this NFL award. And he certainly helped his case on Sunday, putting up insane numbers against the New York Jets.
Maye finished the day going 19-of-21 for 256 yards and five touchdowns with a passer rating of 157.0 and a 90.5 completion percentage.
So, when asked about Maye’s accomplishments this season and whether Mike Vrabel feels the second-year quarterback has done enough to be named the league MVP, the head coach didn’t hold back.
“Oh, well, I certainly — they don’t give me a vote, but I would. There’s nobody else that we want as our quarterback or that I want as our quarterback,” Vrabel told reporters. “And so to be able to do that, and as the plays go through to progression, somebody asked me this week about progression and different things, I said, ‘Just throw to the guy that’s open as soon as you work through your progression,’ and I think he did that. Some really good designs, but also some great execution.”
Mike Vrabel Gives Drake Maye A Game Ball
After the game, the Patriots shared a video of Vrabel’s talk with the team in the locker room, which included the moment where he handed out the game ball.
While he often gives it to multiple players, only one guy received it on Sunday.
“Fellas we talked about this. Unfinished business. I’m proud of you for the way that you came out. I’m proud of you for the way you kept your composure,” Vrabel said. “I know it’s not easy out there. But I appreciate you for being the team that we are and believing in our identity, believing in each other. We still got some business to finish but when they put us on the road, we started in Miami, we finished in New York.”
“It was a great team win and a lot of great efforts and everybody helped us, but I’m glad we got No. 10 pulling trigger,” he continued.
And to make the moment even better, the smile on Maye’s face as Vrabel threw him the ball said it all.
Drake Maye Reacts To Reaching 4,000 Passing Yards In A Single Season
@nbcsboston Drake Maye joins Tom Brady and Drew Bledsoe in rarified air after reaching 4,000+ passing yards
Drake Maye joined some elite company on Sunday, becoming the third quarterback in franchise history to reach the 4,000-yard mark, joining Tom Brady and Drew Bledsoe.
After the game, Maye was asked about this accomplishment, but remained as humble as ever.
“I wouldn’t say I’m in conversation with them two,” he said. “Those are probably the two best in Patriots history, so, it’s an honor to do that, but it took everybody. Like we say in the offensive room, it takes everybody, 11 on each and every play. And whether it’s me throwing for that many yards or throwing for 20 yards, whatever it takes to win, I think that’s the most important thing and thing I care about is our win-loss record. We still have some work left to do and some games ahead that should be fun.”
