Patriots QB Drake Maye Has Humble Message on ‘MVP’ Chants After Jets Win

Heading into the 2025 NFL season, the New England Patriots were expected to be an improved team with new head coach Mike Vrabel at the helm, but certainly not a force to be reckoned with in the AFC, like they’ve become with a talented young quarterback leading the way in Drake Maye.

On Thursday night, the Patriots won their eighth consecutive game by getting the best of the division rival New York Jets at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Although it was close in the early going, New England started to pull away in the second half once Maye got going, improving the team’s record to an impressive 9-2, which currently stands as the best in the NFL.

During the 27-14 win over the Jets, Maye started to get MVP chants from the home crowd at Foxboro, which are completely justified with how well he’s played over the course of the first 11 games of the 2025 campaign.

Maye has been generating some MVP buzz for a few weeks now, as people are starting to realize that the Patriots are the real deal this season, with the North Carolina product being a significant reason for the storied franchise’s success.

After the game, during his postgame press conference, Maye was asked about how it felt to get MVP chants from the Patriots faithful.

“That was maybe for TreVeyon [Henderson] tonight,” Maye said. “He scored three touchdowns. Our fans have been great with me since I got here, since I got drafted. I appreciate them for embracing me. I’m trying to embrace this city, giving these fans and this team everything I got.”

Vrabel also chimed in on Maye, hearing the MVP chants from the crowd in New England.

“I would say his performance, in general, has been what we expect,” Vrabel said of Maye’s performance. “We have high expectations for Drake. He has high expectations for himself.

“He’ll continue to improve. I know that he’ll stay humble through this all. … We just have to continue to focus on the little things, operation, unforced errors throughout the offense. The only thing that really stops us is us offensively.”

During Thursday’s win against the Jets, Maye threw for 281 yards and one touchdown while completing 25 of his 34 pass attempts.

As Maye pointed out, however, it was Henderson who stole the show, as he racked up three touchdowns, rushing for two and catching one to go along with 93 all-purpose yards.

Is Mike Vrabel the NFL Coach of the Year?

Along with Maye getting a lot of MVP buzz and potentially being a two-man race with Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams for the regular-season award, Vrabel has been getting a lot of attention for his efforts as the team’s new head coach.

Vrabel hasn’t missed a beat from a coaching perspective, and like Maye, might be in a two-man race for the regular-season award with Shane Stiechen of the Indianapolis Colts.

Suppose the Patriots continue to win games every week while potentially winning the AFC East division title ahead of the Buffalo Bills. In that case, Vrabel might beat out Stiechen while having an NFL MVP under center.
