Patriots Re-Sign 6-foot-7 Lineman With Local Ties

The New England Patriots are bringing back a rookie undrafted free agent (UDFA) who spent training camp with the team. Per his agent, Matt Leist, iOL Jack Conley is being resigned to the Patriots practice squad.

Conley was among the Patriots’ final roster cuts when they had to trim the team to the 53-man regular-season limit on August 26. He played guard in college at Boston College, and was a preseason star for New England. Across three preseason games, he played 76 snaps and did not allow a sack.

In a corresponding move, the Patriots waived G Mike Conley from the practice squad, another rookie UDFA from Arkansas State. Conley returns to practice squad after starting the season on it.

The New England Patriots Need Help on the Offensive Line

The Patriots are sporting a fairly young offensive line. RG Mike Onwenu is the lone holdover from last season, as the team prioritized new faces in the offseason. Rookie No. 4 overall pick Will Campbell starts at left tackle, where the team has high hopes for him. But he’s a rookie, and had a few issues in his first start last week. Fellow rookie Jared Wilson starts at left guard, a third-round pick who played center in college.

RT Morgan Moses is the grizzled veteran of the group, but he’s getting up there and doesn’t move the way he used to. C Garrett Bradbury is a capable starter who came over from Minnesota in free agency, but the Vikings prioritized an upgrade over him themselves this offseason.

There isn’t much proven depth behind the starters, either. Injuries could quickly decimate an already thin group, leading to more problems for New England’s offense. Conley may only be on the practice squad, but there’s a chance he could be called up for duty sooner rather than later. He proved in the preseason he has potential.

An Important Test Awaits the New England Patriots in Week 2

The Dolphins got annihilated by the Colts in Week 1 in the biggest blowout of the season’s opening week. This was a team that had a lot of questions entering the season, but they have a talented defensive line, and their offensive core — QB Tua Tagovailoa, RB De’Von Achane, WRs Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, all lead by HC Mike McDaniel — is one of the most potent in the country. Just a few short years ago, Miami was battling Buffalo for the division every year.

Now, they’ll be desperate. And the Patriots have to travel to Miami to take them on after dropping their opener themselves against the Raiders. Both teams need a win, but the Dolphins are more talented on paper and are favored in this game.

Patriots HC Mike Vrabel is one of the best in the business and will have his guys ready to play. If they can knock off the Dolphins in their home stadium, that will instill this young team with a lot of confidence.
