New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs returned from injury on Monday night, but quarterback Drake Maye didn’t rely on Diggs any extra in a 33-15 victory over the New York Giants.
Diggs, the team’s leading receiver, has 64 receptions for 705 yards and three touchdowns this year, but he only had three receptions for 26 yards in the win. Maye spread the ball around as he threw for 282 yards on 24-31 passing, and he threw two touchdowns to wide receiver Kayshon Boutte and fellow wideout Kyle Williams.
Diggs, who has been around a top-tier quarterback in Josh Allen for years, nonetheless likes the second-year quarterback’s approach and the results coming with it. Before joining the Patriots this year, Diggs spent a year with the Houston Texans and four years with the Buffalo Bills.
“It’s been exciting, as far as with a young quarterback, showing a lot of promise, a lot of confidence. Coming from a quarterback position and being young, it’s obviously something there,” Diggs told reporters afterwards regarding Maye. “But I think the biggest thing is, he comes in each and every day, and he’s the same guy. He approaches the game like a professional, and he has a lot of fun. And he’s super hard on himself.”
Maye continues to impress amid MVP chants in the stands and chatter off the field. He has completes 71.5% of his passes for 3,412 yards for 23 touchdowns thus far through 13 games. Maye has also rushed for 319 yards and two touchdowns on 81 carries.
Stefon Diggs Praises WR Kyle Williams
GettyStefon Diggs congratulates Kyle Williams on his touchdown against the Giants.
Williams hasn’t been a dominant wideout this season, with just five catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns, with the second coming against the Giants.
That score gave the Patriots a 24-7 lead as Williams hauled in a 33-yard deep ball from Maye. It won the praise of Diggs, who knows it hasn’t been easy for the rookie from Washington State.
“The consistency. He is a young guy, but he can roll, he’s fast, he’s savvy. He’s been open a lot,” Diggs said. “They haven’t connected throughout the year, but it’s around that time that those banked reps that you’ve had, and that consistency that you put on tape of getting open, start to turn the corner for you. So, super happy for him.”
Stefon Diggs: ‘It’s Not Fake Out There’
Diggs has long been known as a receiver who wants the ball and wants to be the go-to wideout.
That said, he is enjoying the Patriots’ team-first approach and culture under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel. Diggs has been on numerous playoff teams elsewhere, and he sees a strong postseason push coming for the Patriots.
“Probably the camaraderie, guys really pulling for each other,” Diggs said. “It’s not fake out there. You want the guys to play well, you want the guys around you to play well. Throwing those extra blocks and doing all that. I think it goes a long wayâ¦we’re super hard on each other. I think the accountability is there, coming from when a guy doesn’t get as many yards or does this, we all hold each other accountable.”
