The Las Vegas Raiders felt that the loss against the Cleveland Browns was a breaking point for the offense, as they chose to part ways with offensive coordinator Chip Kelly after the game.
As a result of the change, the team has named Greg Olson the interim offensive coordinator. Olson is no stranger to the job, as he’s held the position with the Raiders multiple times over the course of his career. He has also served as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, then-St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Needless to say, he’s qualified for the position, with the Raiders’ brass hoping things change offensively moving forward, even though the 2025 campaign has turned out to be a lost cause in terms of making the NFL playoffs.
Pete Carroll’s Cryptic Answer on Raiders’ Change at Offensive Coordinator
GettyHead coach Pete Carroll of the Las Vegas Raiders.
With the Raiders moving on from Kelly, Olson was able to get a few practices under his belt as the interim offensive coordinator. Head coach Pete Carroll was asked about the change on offense this week and what he saw on the practice field.
“It felt a little different,” Carroll said during media availability. “I’m glad he had an impact, so we’ll see what happens on gameday, but the guys responded really well.”
Although Carroll seemed optimistic about the change this week, he refused to answer a question about whether he saw anything heading in a positive direction during practice this week with Olson as the new offensive coordinator.
“I really don’t want to say anything right now,” Carroll said. “The only advantage we have on these guys is that they don’t know what we’re doing or how we’re doing it, so I’m not saying a thing about it.”
Carroll, however, did praise Olson for being thrust into a difficult situation in the wake of Kelly’s firing.
“You’ve got to give him a lot of credit. It’s a hard challenge, and he takes great pride in it, and he’s a true pro. He’s done this before and he’s led us through this really, really well.”
It’ll be interesting to see whether the change to Olson makes a significant change, as the Raiders will head into another tough matchup against the division rival Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
Geno Smith Apologizes to Raiders Fans

Veteran quarterback Geno Smith‘s first season with the Raiders has been rough, to say the least. It seems as though nothing has gone right for the 35-year-old since he was traded to Las Vegas by the Seattle Seahawks, and now it appears the frustration is boiling over.
After the loss to the Browns, Smith made an obscene gesture toward Raiders fans, which he apologized for during his media availability this week, ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Chargers.
“I would like to apologize to the fans, Raider Nation,” Smith said. “I made a poor judgment out of frustration. And that’s not an excuse. I’ve got to be better than that and hold myself to a higher standard. In that moment, I didn’t. I’m sincerely apologetic and very sorry for doing that.”
At this point, Smith and the Raiders just want to get through the rest of the 2025 campaign healthy while potentially showing some promise for next season.
