Phillies Land $20 Million Prediction to Add Impact Free Agent

The MLB offseason was not an overwhelming success for the Philadelphia Phillies this year.

For a team that is known for being aggressive and for being willing to spend money, the Phillies had a very quiet offseason. They were able to re-sign star slugger Kyle Schwarber, which was their top priority, but no other high-impact moves were made.

J.T. Realmuto was re-signed in free agency as well. However, that move came after Philadelphia missed out on signing former Toronto Blue Jays star infielder Bo Bichette.

While the offseason was not a very busy one for the Phillies, there are still some quality options left for the team to consider.

Keeping that in mind, Philadelphia has been predicted to make a major late move in free agency just ahead of the start of the 2026 MLB season.

Philadelphia Phillies Predicted to Make $20 Million Move in Free Agency

Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter took a look at projecting each MLB team’s starting rotation for the 2026 season. When it came to the Phillies, he had Lucas Giolito penciled in for Philadelphia.

“As the roster currently stands, the Phillies have essentially put all of their eggs in the Andrew Painter basket to fill the No. 5 starter job, unless non-roster invitees Bryse Wilson and Tucker Davidson make a surprise roster push,” Reuter wrote.

“That makes them one of the few logical fits for Lucas Giolito, who is still searching for a new home in free agency after posting a 3.41 ERA in 145 innings for the Red Sox last year.”

Making a move for Giolito would be a big win for the Phillies. He would round out their rotation perfectly and would raise their ceiling for the upcoming campaign.

What Would Lucas Giolito Bring to the Phillies?

At 31 years old, Giolito clearly still has some good baseball left in his arm. He is coming off of a quality 2025 MLB season with the Boston Red Sox.

During the 2025 season, Giolito made 26 starts and compiled a 10-4 record to go along with a 3.41 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP, a 2.2 K/BB ratio, and 145 innings pitched. Those numbers would fit nicely in with Philadelphia.

Ranger Suarez was one of the casualties of the MLB offseason for the Phillies. He ended up leaving Philadelphia to sign a lucrative five-year, $130 million contract with the Red Sox. Being able to turn around and sign Giolito would help replace him.

Whether or not the Phillies will actually target or sign Giolito remains to be seen. It’s just a prediction at this point in time, but it’s one that would make a lot of sense for the team.
