The Philadelphia Phillies are thought to be big players this offseason. On top of big free agent decisions regarding stars like Kyle Schwarber and Ranger Suarez, Philadelphia also must decide what to do with outfielders Harrison Bader and Nick Castellanos.
Castellanos is expected to either get traded or outright released this offseason, and it’s unclear whether the Phillies want to re-sign Bader at this moment. Either way, the Phillies remain in the market for an outfielder. A recent trade proposal would land Boston Red Sox outfielder Masataka Yoshida in Philadelphia.

Red Sox’s Masataka Yoshida Named as Top Trade Candidate
If the Phillies are going to make any player personnel moves this offseason, it will likely come via making additions to the outfield.
In a recent Bleacher Report article by writer Kerry Miller, the Red Sox’s Masataka Yoshida is named as the team’s top offseason trade candidate:
“Speaking of expendable bats who just had their worst season but rank among the most expensive line items on the payroll, the Red Sox have no real use for Yoshida at this point, with Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran, and Ceddanne Rafaela all now regulars in the lineup.”
GettyPhillies predicted to sign slugger to replace Harrison Bader.
Yoshida has recently picked up a lot of trade value because of what Miller alludes to. Boston already has a loaded outfield and is heavy with left-handed bats. This leaves Yoshida as the odd man out, and the Phillies should think about capitalizing on that. Masataka Yoshida is signed through 2028 on a five-year, $90 million deal, which looks like a large overpay to this point.
He’s been in MLB for just three seasons, and he was limited to just 55 games in 2025; however, this might be the best time to trade for Yoshida and maximize his value.

What Would the Phillies Have to Give Up?
A large part of what makes the Philadelphia Phillies the corresponding piece in this Masataka Yoshida trade idea is the fact that the Phillies have so much trade capital. The front office could consider giving up one of its top 15 prospects in a deal for Yoshida, or they could go the route of a player swap deal, which is what we have seen in the early going of MLB’s hot stove.
As far as players the Phillies could include in a deal for Yoshida, second baseman Bryson Stott comes to mind, and so does Matt Strahm.
Third baseman Alec Bohm has also been the subject of trade rumors this offseason, and he could be the center piece of this deal if the Red Sox had a decision on whether they’re going to retain Alex Bregman or not.
In 303 games, Masataka Yoshida has 29 home runs, 154 RBI, and an OPS+ of 109. Other trade targets for the Phillies include Jo Adell and Yoshida’s teammate in Wilyer Abreu.
