Proposed MLB Trade Has Yankees Land $6 Million All-Star in 4-Player Deal

The New York Yankees still have moves to make in the early stages of the offseason and there are no shortage of MLB rumors on who could soon be wearing pinstripes. New York has been linked to several prized free agents in addition to trying to re-sign Cody Bellinger.

The Yankees could also turn to the trade market in an attempt to bolster the team’s World Series chances for 2026. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter offered an intriguing trade proposal that has the Yankees land Milwaukee Brewers All-Star closer Trevor Megill in exchange for three players.

Let’s dive into the Yankees-Brewers trade pitch.

Potential Yankees Trade Target Trevor Megill Is Coming Off an All-Star Season With the Brewers

The proposed trade has the Yankees acquire Megill in exchange pitcher Carlos Lagrange, first baseman T.J. Rumfield and pitcher Harrison Cohen. Megill is coming off an All-Star campaign which included career-high numbers with 30 saves and 60 strikeouts.

“The Yankees have a clear need to bolster their relief corps and a history of dealing with the Brewers, as just last winter they acquired Devin Williams under similar circumstances,” Reuter wrote in a December 1, 2025, story titled, “6 Fresh Trade Ideas for Cole Ragans, Ketel Marte and More at 2025 MLB Winter Meetings.”

“Giving the Brewers their pick of Carlos Lagrange, Bryce Cunningham or Elmer Rodriguez as the prospect centerpiece, alongside a couple second-tier prospects that are close to MLB ready in 25-year-old T.J. Rumfield and 26-year-old Harrison Cohen would be a nice return package for Megill’s two years of remaining control.”

The Yankees Have Hinted About Aiming to Lower Payroll

Megill is on a team-friendly one-year, $6.5 million contract in 2026. Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner has been candid about wanting to manage the team’s payroll while balancing a championship-caliber roster.

“Would it be ideal if I went down [with the payroll]? Of course,” Steinbrenner admitted, per ESPN’s Jorge Castillo. “But does that mean that’s going to happen? Of course not.

“We want to field a team we know could win a championship — or we believe could win a championship.”

Yankees Rumors: Mets Could Look to Poach Cody Bellinger in MLB Free Agency

The Yankees have yet to make a big splash in MLB free agency. Instead, the Yankees have focused their attention on retaining their own players, including Bellinger. New York was already able to retain Trent Grisham and hopes to re-sign Bellinger as well.

It appears the Yankees could have competition from within their own city for Bellinger’s services. New York Post’s Jon Heyman labeled the New York Mets as a potential landing spot for Bellinger.

“Cody Bellinger looks like a better Mets fit now that Nimmo has been traded,” Heyman detailed in a November 27, story titled, “Mets now have even more reason to battle Yankees for top target Cody Bellinger.” “If they bring back Alonso (things feel much more positive this year than last), Bellinger could enhance the 1B situation by giving Alonso a DH day.

“But the Yankees continue to make Bellinger their No. 1 target, plus Philly and both LA teams are lurking.”
