Rams $10 Million Receiver Named Under the Radar Player

The Los Angeles Rams made a big splash by signing wide receiver Davante Adams on a two-year deal.

With his addition, the Rams had one of the top wide receiver duos in the league, with Adams and Puka Nacua. With the two players garnering much attention from opposing defenses, it would allow another player to stand out.

Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports names Tutu Atwell as an “under-the-radar” player for the Rams.

“The Rams put at least three wide receivers on the field at the second-highest rate in the NFL last year, and after adding Davante Adams to pair with Puka Nacua this offseason, Los Angeles has a really strong top two,” Pereles said. “But No. 3? That role falls to Atwell, the diminutive 2021 second-rounder who has increased his receptions, receiving yards and catch rate every season. In his four highest snap-share games, he averaged five catches and 71 receiving yards. He has speed no other player on Los Angeles’ offense has.”

Atwell was third on the team in reception yards, producing 562 yards on 42 catches last season, both career highs.

Sean McVay on Re-Signing Tutu Atwell

Tutu Atwell was a free agent before returning to the Rams on a one-year, $10 million contract.

Rams head coach Sean McVay spoke to reporters about bringing Atwell back with the team.

“I think when you look at his body of work, when he’s been able to play – especially in some of the times that he was playing when Cooper [Kupp] was on IR – there was a lot of production,” McVay said, via Rams Wire. “And if you project that over the course of 17 games, you just watch what he was able to do.”

“He’s matured as a young man. I love the person, getting to know him, and I think that he’s only getting better. He’s 24 years old. I thought he really improved his route detail. For a smaller guy, he’s got a good catch radius.”

The receiver has stated that he is excited to return to Los Angeles.

“It feels great, man. Them giving me this contract means everything, because they believed in me and they see what I did in the past years,” Atwell said, via Rams.

Atwell on Next Season

Atwell said that McVay hasn’t stated how the team will use him next season, but he will stay prepared when his number is called.

“I trust coach Sean. I have no doubt he’s going to use me to my ability, and I’m just waiting for the future, waiting for this year, but we had some good conversations,” Atwell said.

While Atwell might not be the first or second option, he showed that he can produce on limited targets.

The receiver has a connection with quarterback Matthew Stafford, which would give him some looks his way while Adams gets comfortable with the Rams’ playbook.
