Rams 10-Year Vet Named Cut Candidate By Analyst

The Los Angeles Rams were able to bring in offensive receiving weapons for quarterback Matthew Stafford this offseason despite losing wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

Bringing in three-time All-Pro Davante Adams will step in for the former Kupp. The Rams also drafted highly touted tight end Terrance Ferguson in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Ferguson joins a competitive tight end group on the Rams, leaving questions about the incumbent’s future in Los Angeles.

Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski names tight end Tyler Higbee as a potential cut candidate for Los Angeles ahead of the 2025-26 season.

“The Los Angeles Rams wanted a weapon at tight end. Enter this year’s second-round draft pick Terrance Ferguson,” Sobleski wrote. “Tyler Higbee has been a solid contributor throughout his nine seasons. However, he doesn’t create mismatches in the passing game. Furthermore, he’s coming off a season where he played in only three games due knee and chest injuries.”

“McVay knows he can lean on Higbee as the veteran presence in the Rams’ tight end room. At the same time, keep the following in mind. Higbee is 32 years old. The Rams can save $4.7 million towards the 2025 cap with this release… Higbee might be a security blanket for the coaching staff, but the Rams have significant talent at the tight end position to proceed without him on the roster.”

Younger Options In The Position Group

Higbee turned 32 years old at the beginning of the year, six years older than the next tight end in Los Angeles.

Outside of drafting Ferguson, the Rams signed Colby Parkinson to a three-year, $22.5 million contract last season. Also on the roster is third-year tight end Davis Allen.

Parkinson, 26, and Allen, 24, recorded just 333 receiving yards and a single touchdown last season, even with Higbee out for the majority of the season.

Higbee played the last three regular season games in the 2024-25 season and recorded 66 receiving yards and two touchdowns. In the postseason, the tight end was able to log 112 yards and a single TD, showing his effectiveness when healthy.

Ferguson, 22, joins the Rams after playing four collegiate seasons at the University of Oregon. In his last season as a Duck, the tight end posted 591 receiving yards and 3 TDs.

While Higbee still appears to have the quality in the latter end of his career, a good training camp from any of the younger options could see his future with the Rams come to an end.

New Looks On Offense

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay appears to want to keep Tyler Higbee on the roster following his recent comments on the tight end group.

“It gives us the ability to mix personnel,” McVay said. “Ultimately, it’s how we bring it to life? What does that really look like? But I feel like we’ve got a really deep tight end room. [Tight ends coach] Scotter Huff has done an excellent job.”

“Tyler Higbee leading the way. I think Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen have been outstanding. And I’ve been really pleased with Terrance Ferguson.”

An NFL roster could hold five tight ends on the 53-man roster. With how McVay described the tight ends’ performances in training camp, the possibility of all four remaining seems likely.
