Rams’ Coordinator Named Option For Recent Head Coaching Job

It is a bad season to be a head coach in the NFL named Brian.

The New York Giants have fired head coach Brian Daboll, the second head coaching firing this season, after the Tennessee Titans fired Brian Callahan earlier in the season.

The Giants fired Daboll after losing to the Chicago Bears in Week 10, 20-24, extending the team’s losing streak to four.

With his hiring, it’s time to drop predictions on who will become the new head coach, with one NFL analyst naming the Rams defensive coordinator as an option.

Chris Shula Named Option To Replace Daboll

There are a bunch of coaches who are throwing their name in the hat to become the next HC in New Jersey.

Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr names LA Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula as an option to replace Brian Daboll in New York.

“Shula has taken the job from Raheem Morris and run with an incredible opportunity. Most notable for the Giants would be Shula’s ability to effectively maneuver versatile chess pieces up front, much like he has been doing for a unit that is pressuring the quarterback at a significantly better rate than the Giants. Shula is the nephew of former Giants offensive coordinator Mike Shula, and the Maras and Shulas have obvious ties as entrenched football families,” Orr wrote.

After Week 10, the Rams’ defense is allowing 17 points per game, which is the second-fewest in the league.

Shula is calling the plays and allowing only 17 points per game without a solid secondary. If Shula were to get his hands on the young defensive front with the Giants, he could have a field day, especially with Brian Burns.

Another Rams Coordinator Touted For The Job

Chris Shula isn’t the only coordinator on the Rams who has his name in the hat for the New York Giants head coaching job.

Conor Orr also lists LA’s passing game coordinator, Nate Scheelhaase, as another option for New York.

“The 35-year-old is a staple of Sean McVay’s highly innovative offensive staff and could emerge as a surprise candidate this offseason,” Orr wrote. “He has been with the Rams since 2024 and was sought after on the offensive coordinator interview circuit this offseason, with requests being made from the [Tampa Bay] Buccaneers and [Jacksonville] Jaguars. He had two additional OC interview offers that he turned down.”

This is Scheelhaase’s first season as the pass game coordinator for the Rams and he has Matthew Stafford playing like an MVP candidate. The quarterback has the fourth-most passing yards in the league and the most passing touchdowns with 25, through 10 weeks.

Scheelhaase is a young, offensive-minded coach who could play a key part in the development of Jaxson Dart and have a multi-year project with the potential franchise quarterback.
