Rams Cut Ties with Veteran Cornerback After Roger McCreary Trade

The Los Angeles Rams are set to return to action in Week 9 after enjoying their bye week in Week 8, and they have a new face in town on the team. That player is cornerback Roger McCreary, who was picked up in a trade with the Tennessee Titans earlier this week as the Rams look to shore up their secondary for their upcoming postseason push.

McCreary will have to learn Los Angeles’ defensive scheme on the fly, but he should be able to make an immediate impact for his new team. And now that he’s in town, that made another cornerback, Tre Brown, expendable, and it led to the team making another important roster move ahead of their upcoming game.

Rams Release Cornerback Tre Brown

While Los Angeles has generally turned in a solid defensive season so far, it has struggled to find consistent options at cornerback. Quentin Lake has held down the slot position for all seven games, but the boundary positions have been tougher to fill. Cobie Durant and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. are the starters currently, but Darious Williams has also started three games this year, and Brown factored into the mix alongside Josh Wallace, too.

The addition of McCreary will give head coach Sean McVay another option to turn to at the position moving forward. A former second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, McCreary began to fall out of favor with the Titans as the season went on, and with his deal up at the end of the season, it became clear he was a trade candidate for the team.

With McCreary coming to town, that meant that the front office needed to move on from one of the guys on their 53-man roster. Brown had become the odd man out over the past couple of weeks, and with McCreary joining the team, he ended up getting the short end of the stick, as the team released him on Tuesday.

“Rams placed WR Tutu Atwell on IR and cut CB Tre Brown. They acquired CB Roger McCreary so unless I’m missing something else they currently have one additional roster spot FWIW,” Jake Oliver Ellenbogen of Downtown Rams shared in a post on X.

What Role Will Roger McCreary Fill with the Rams?

Throughout his career, McCreary has shown flashes of being a strong outside cornerback, but he hasn’t been nearly consistent enough in his coverage. This season, McCreary is allowing a 112.6 passer rating on throws where he is the closest defender, which simply isn’t very good. He should have a bit more protection in Los Angeles’ defensive scheme, but if he wants to prove his worth, he’s going to have to be better moving forward.

The Rams are likely going to ease McCreary into the action, so chances are he’s only going to be used in obvious passing situations over his first few games with the team. If he proves he can hold up, the coaching staff will likely give him more responsibilities. McCreary is on track to make his debut with L.A. in Week 9 when the team takes on the New Orleans Saints.
