The Los Angeles Rams will face the Philadelphia Eagles on September 21 at Lincoln Financial Field. Moreover, the Rams will need to prepare for the infamous push tush play that’s in the Eagles’ arsenal.
Nonetheless, the play comes with controversy. The Eagles leaned on the tush push six times in the win over the Kansas City Chiefs, turning it into four first downs and a touchdown.
After the game, FOX NFL analyst Tom Brady and Chiefs coach Andy Reid pointed out that Philadelphia’s offensive linemen seemed to be moving early at the snap but weren’t penalized.
With the Rams facing the Eagles in Week 3, Davante Adams was asked about the tush push and where he stands on the play.
“I just asked, at this point, if they’re going to allow it to be run, then at least police it and make sure guys aren’t getting off the ball,” Adams told Kay Adams on the September 16 edition of the “Up & Adams” show.
“They’re so efficient with it, and they already do such a good job that you’ve got to at least make it fair. You can’t have the guards and tackles taking off, spearing down like that early, before guys get a chance to get off the ball. Otherwise, you’ll never be able to stop it.”
Rams’ Davante Adams Has More to Say on Tush Push
Adams also pointed out that the tush push isn’t a play most NFL fans enjoy watching on a regular basis. The Rams star admitted it works, but said it isn’t exactly pleasing to watch.
“I love football to a degree where I just don’t know how much the fans really want to watch that,” Adams added. “But if that’s what they want to do and it’s legal, then they’re good at it. So they’re going to do what they want to do and do what they got to do. I’m just not a big fan of watching it.
“When I’m watching a football game like a fan, I’d rather see somebody come downhill and run inside zone, outside zone, a toss crack or something. But hey, I’m not calling anybody’s plays. It’s just my own personal feeling about it. We’ll see what the league does about it. At least police should make sure that they’re staying on sides if we’re going to continue to let them do it.”
Eagles Standout Claps Back Against Tush Push Criticism
Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata pushed back against the growing media narrative that his team beat the Chiefs simply because of the tush push.
Speaking on September 16 with 94 WIP in Philadelphia, Mailata called it “incredibly disrespectful” to overlook the Eagles’ defense and special teams’ role in the 20-17 win at Kansas City.
“I understand the outrage [over the tush push],” Mailata said. “What I don’t understand is them using it as an excuse to why we won the game. I think it’s incredibly disrespectful to our defense and our special teams who balled out. And my brothers on defense and special teams who balled out that game, who had our backs when we weren’t moving the ball or weren’t doing anything.
“That pisses me off because we give so much to this game and to kind of base off a short-yardage play, that is a football play,” Mailata added, his voice raising. And say that we won the game off that, but not how our defense played and not how our special teams have played, putting us in those positions. You know I think it’s bullcrap.”
