Rams HC Sean McVay Gets Honest About Matthew Stafford After Comments

The Los Angeles Rams squandered a 19-point lead over the Philadelphia Eagles, finishing a 33-26 loss with quarterback Matthew Stafford lamenting his performance. Stafford completed 19 of 33 passes for 196 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception in the game.

He also opened the game with an interception on the Rams’ fourth play from scrimmage.

Despite that, his head coach, Sean McVay, has taken a more optimistic stance on the QB’s performance in a game that featured the Eagles blocking two Rams field goal attempts.

McVay pointed to the “standards in terms of the accuracy” that Stafford has set for himself as the reason behind the QB’s complaints. McVay noted that Stafford is used to “delivering the ball with consistency.”

“I love the way that he has such high standards that he’s earned because of the special player that he is. So, just a couple throws that I think he would be accustomed to being able to make that he missed. And I think one of the things that’s cool about Matthew is the refreshing security to acknowledge that, and that’s what allows him to move forward the right way. He certainly did a hell of a job in that two-minute situation,” McVay told reporters on September 22

“Got us into some good looks to be able to convert some third-down runs, and we had a chance to be able to win the football game. But I think that’s just a credit to his standards and the consistent accuracy that he delivers with the majority of the time. And there was a couple throws that he typically makes.”

McVay expressed similar sentiments immediately after the game and during the “Coach McVay Show” on September 22.

“Good battle. Obviously, good football team across the way. Had our chances, really in all phases, probably, to win that one, and didn’t get it done, which is – it’s frustrating,” Stafford told reporters on September 21. “But got to go look at the tape, find ways to be better. There’s definitely plays out there, I know myself, first and foremost, that I can be better. Just physically throwing the ball. So, trust myself to go out there and do that.”

Stafford and the Rams got good news on that front.

Rams Get Early Good News About Colts

GettyLos Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay looks on against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Rams will look to get back into the win column against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4. The Colts are off to a 3-0 start this season. They have former New York Giants QB Daniel Jones at the helm.

However, they suffered a blow in Week 3, with nickelback Kenny Moore suffering an injury. Colts head coach Shane Steichen did not have a recovery timeline, but the team signed Mike Hilton.

“He’s dealing with the calf right now,” Steichen told reporters Monday. “We’ll see how it goes.”

“Another one worth watching,” The Athletic’s Nate Atkins posted on X on September 22. “The Rams like to motion Puka Nacua into the slot and I wonder if we see more 11 personnel from the Rams this week if a Pro Bowl nickel corner is out. Charvarius Ward should be traveling with Davante Adams.”

That could set Nacua up for another big day on the receiving end of passes from Stafford in Week 4 against the Colts.
